Employment and Salary Trends for New York Communication Design Artists

According to the latest report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state of New York is home to 183,540 artists and designers. This major group includes communication designers, graphic designers, filmmakers, multimedia artists, web designers, and more. The population of New York artists and designers has increased significantly since 2002, when the state was home to 155,130. Salaries are up as well.

The average salary for New York artists and designers is $71,130, up from $50,280 in 2002. It is important to note that salaries (and employment growth) for artists vary greatly by field. For example, New York was home to 3,780 multimedia artists (and animators) in 2002. Today, the state is home to around 2,770.  Salaries are up, however, from $51,360 in 2002, to $70,670 today.

New York art directors, on the other hand, have enjoyed both salary and employment increases between 2002 and today. According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report (March 2012), New York art directors averaged $85,390. Today, they average $134,550. In 2002, New York was home to 4,110 art directors in 2002. Today, the state is home to 5,870.

Media and communication professionals make up one of the smallest creative groups in New York. However, at 1,220, New York has one of the highest populations of media and communications professionals in the country. Nationwide, the number of salaried artists and designers is 1.7 million, up from 1.5 million on 2002. Salaries have continued to climb since 2002 as well. In 2002, the average salary for artists and designers was $41,660. Today, they average $53,850.
