The U.S. is home to nearly 1.8 million professionals working in Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media (ADESM) occupations. Nearly 200,000 of these professionals live in New York. The population of artists in New York is so large, is only second to California’s population of 290,160. Artists are attracted to New York for obvious reasons. The state offers unlimited opportunities to make it big in everything from fine art, film and video to gaming, technology and advertising. 

The state is home to major studios and networks such as MTV, Nickelodeon Digital, Spike TV, and Comedy Central, and top creative agencies such as DDB Needham, Saatchi & Saatchi, and JWT. New York is also home to more than 1,900 computer systems and design firms and game  design studios such as Gameloft, Vicarious Visions (a Studio of Activision Blizzard), and Atari.

Employment and Salary Trends for New York Animators

New York is home to 2,510 multimedia artists and animators. They average $70,660 per year down from $71,960 in 2013 when the state was home to 2,710 multimedia artists and animators. Across the nation, employment for multimedia artists and animators is expected to increase by six percent for the 2012-2022 decade. Nationwide, multimedia artists and animators averaged $61,370 (median) in 2013. Today, the average median salary is $63,630. The lowest paid animators and multimedia artists earned $34,860 in 2013 and the highest paid averaged $113,470 per year. Today, the highest paid animators average $112,030 per year and the lowest paid animators average $35,510.   

Across the nation, employment for multimedia artists and animators is expected to increase by six percent for the 2012-2022 decade

Although salaries and the population of multimedia artists and animators in New York dipped slightly between 2013 and today, New York still has the fourth highest average salary for multimedia artists and animators and the second highest employment level in the nation. California has the highest employment level, while Washington, Texas, and Georgia have the third, fourth and fifth highest, respectively. The top five highest paying states are:

  1. California ($82,170 per year)
  2. Washington ($75,740 per year)
  3. Massachusetts ($73,470 per year)
  4. New York ($70,660 per year)
  5. Idaho ($69,450 per year)

At $73,140 per year, animators and multimedia artists living in the New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division average several thousand more per year than the state average. In addition, although job opportunities can be found in many cities in the State of New York, the New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division has the second highest employment level for animators and multimedia artists of the top ten metro areas for this occupation. Also worth considering are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse.

Awesome Animation Fact: For the Oscar winning film Frozen (2013), Hans, Kristoff, and Anna were all named after Hans Christian Andersen, the creator of “The Snow Queen.” Moreover, if you say the names of four of the films main characters (Hans, Kristoff, Anna, Sven), you may hear a familiar name.
