Scope of Program:
Visual Communications students at The University of Texas at Arlington complete the Art Foundations program, which includes courses in drawing, 2D and 3D design, digital design, art history, 3D studio and typography, before applying to the major. Accepted students continue with coursework in layout, digital imaging, sign and symbol, illustration, advertising design, electronic design, sustainable design and design methodologies. All students create a portfolio and senior exhibition.
Any B. F. A. candidate may apply to the Digital Media Track, which includes coursework in digital design, digital imaging, 2D animation, online design, game concepts 3D animation, motion graphics and interactive media. Students must apply separately during the fall semester to this very selective program. A portfolio is required with the application.
M. F. A. candidates may choose from a variety of concentrations, including Film/Video Art, Intermedia Studio and Visual Communication. Students in all concentrations focus on research, independent study, studio work, special topics and art history. Students must pass a mid-program review and oral examinations and create a summer exhibition each spring semester. All students create a thesis exhibition.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. B. F. A. candidates must pass an entrance review after completing foundation courses in order to be admitted to the major. They must pass a second review after 36 credit hours of art coursework to continue in the program. B. F. A. candidates must take two semesters of a foreign language. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships and teaching assistantships. Texas residents may apply for state-sponsored scholarships and grants. Texas offers a wide variety of nonresident tuition waivers, including bordering state interior county tuition discounts.
