University of Wisconsin – Madison - Art, Graphic Design and Multimedia Programs Profile
Degrees Offered: B. S., B. F. A. Art with Emphasis in Graphic Design, Multimedia, New Genres; M. A., M. F. A. Art with Graphics Specialization

Scope of Program:
Bachelor's degree candidates in the University of Wisconsin – Madison's Art program begin their studies in the Bachelor of Science program. They may apply to the B. F. A. program after at least one year of study. Students complete foundation courses in drawing, art history, digital forms, 3D design, foundations of contemporary art, studio arts and an arts colloquium.
Graphic Design students concentrate on typography and communication design, digital printmaking, computer-augmented printmaking, advanced typography and graphic design, visual communication and research, print production technology and professional practices. All students create a portfolio; B. F. A. candidates must also complete a capstone seminar and create a B. F. A. exhibition.
Multimedia students focus on video, performance and installation, computer-mediated art, 3D digital studios, advanced video, sound design, computer science graphics and special topics in multimedia. All students create a portfolio. B. F. A. candidates create a B. F. A. exhibition and complete a capstone seminar.
New Genres students complete coursework in installations and environments, artist's video, art performance, advanced video, sculpture, performance and installation and special topics in 4D art. All students create a portfolio; B. F. A. candidates also create a B. F. A. exhibition and complete a capstone seminar.
Master's degree candidates take courses in serigraphy, lithography, digital printmaking, relief printing, etching, intaglio, photography, and paper making. M. F. A. candidates must pass oral examinations. All students create a thesis exhibition.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. A. and M. F. A. programs. Minnesota students may be eligible for tuition discounts. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Wisconsin residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants and scholarships.
