What Does Visual Effects Animation Mean?
Visual effects animation (or animation & visual effects) is the art of using 3D modeling, character animation, character rigging, lighting and other techniques to create animations and visual effects for film, television, games, ads, applications, and more. Examples of visual effects animation can be seen in animated films, console games, computer games, education and training materials, and more.
Coursework for Visual Effects Animation Programs
A typical Bachelor of Art (B.A.) program offers instruction in art, animation, design, and visual effects. A large amount of lab work is required and students will have the opportunity to master industry standard visual effects software such as Autodesk Maya & MotionBuilder, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Z-Brush, and Nuke and PFTrack. During the first several of study, students will take general education courses such as Math, Psychology, Science, Communication, Writing, Literature, and History.
During this time, students will also take beginning major courses such as Drawing, Design Basics, Media Sound & Visual 1 & 2, Intro to Animation, Animation 1, 3D Modeling 1, Compositing 1, and Concept Art.
The junior and senior years will be spent taking higher level courses such as Texture & Lighting, 3D Modeling 2, Character Rigging, Dynamic Effects, Animation 2, Compositing 2, Motion Studies, Reel Production, and Creative Pre-Production. During the final year of study, visual effects animation students will have the opportunity to complete a creative project or portfolio and an internship. The internship gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and make valuable contacts in the entertainment ad gaming industries.
What Can I do with a Degree in Visual Effects Animation?
Visual effects animation graduates typically choose a career in film and video or gaming. Just a few popular job titles include animator, game designer, game artist, VFX artist, production artist, illustrator, art director, filmmaker, producer, and director.
