11. California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California 
When the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute merged in 1961 with the help of none other than Walt and Roy Disney, it became one of the most coveted artist’s communities on the west coast. Dubbed California Institute of Arts (better known as CalArts), the school quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the top ten schools for aspiring animators and America’s top college for students in the arts.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is the largest member of the state’s public universities and ticks many of the boxes that students are often eager to find: a vibrant college town; large assortment of majors; NCAA Division 1 sports; and a sophisticated community complete with on-campus art exhibits, theater productions and more. For our purposes, UL’s budding Animation & Computer Arts concentration caught our attention when it recently made our Top 20 Southern List, and we were eager to learn more about the program.

Lucky for you, the region offers a wide range of educational opportunities for future animators, but you might have to look a bit harder at times. That’s why we’ve compiled our own list of 20 southern schools worthy of your attention. Comparing programs can be akin to comparing apples to oranges, but we’ve tried to provide you with a solid list of programs that touch every area of animation. Mind you, when it comes to landing your first- or fifth- industry job, studios will first and foremost look at the applicant’s portfolio and personality.
