11. California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California 
When the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute merged in 1961 with the help of none other than Walt and Roy Disney, it became one of the most coveted artist’s communities on the west coast. Dubbed California Institute of Arts (better known as CalArts), the school quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the top ten schools for aspiring animators and America’s top college for students in the arts.

These schools, along with 69 other colleges in the state, have Title IV status. This means, they have met five strict requirements established by the U.S. Department of Education.

Since 2002, the industry has generated more than 50,000 new jobs and salaries have increased as well. Ten-year projections are so positive that schools have prepared by creating competitive graphic design programs or by expanding existing ones. The State of Carolina is right up there with the leaders of the pack.

According to the most recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau (March 27, 2012), the state of South Carolina is home to 15,130 salaried artists, up from 14,680 in 2002. Nearly 1,800 are graphic designers. They average $40,500 per year (up from $34,550 in 2002). This is higher than the national average salary for all careers. The lowest paid graphic designers in the U.S. earn less than $26,210 overall and the highest 10 percent earn $77,370. In 2002, the average salary for U.S. graphic designers was $36,680 (median).
