Columbus College of Art & Design

As one of the nation’s oldest private art colleges, Columbus College of Art & Design’s small classes and tight knit community may harken back to simpler times but there’s nothing simplistic or insignificant about its animation program. Though a relatively young program, the college has long been turning out successful graduates working in animation (many of whom were cultivated in CCAD’s Illustration and Media Studies programs). Today, the Animation department continues to catch the attention of those in the know- bolstering its compelling list of industry partners as well as successful working alumni.

Seneca College

Seneca College may be Canada’s largest college (with multiple campuses in the greater Toronto area), but more importantly from our perspective is that it’s home to a powerhouse animation department on everyone’s radar. Seneca’s esteemed animation program boasts a rigorous 3 year curriculum with working faculty members who carefully cultivate the next generation of 2D and 3D artists (many of whom can be found working in little known studios such as Pixar, Disney and Blizzard).

Animation

Animation is young.  How young?  Well, before Film was possible or even thought of, Peter Roget presented a paper called “The Persistence of Vision” that explained to the British Royal Society that a succession of images could induce the illusion of movement and life.  That was in 1824- less than 200 years ago.  One year later, to test his theory, the Thaumatrope optical toy is used to demonstrate and confirm Roget’s idea.

Animation Mentor

For freelance animator Nicole Herr, days are filled with more than dailies, planning and last minute iterations. She kicks the day off at six a.m. when she greets a small group of students on her monitor before diving into the day’s agenda. Herr teaches aspiring animators the intricacies of the craft with Animation Mentor, a premier online animation school. Supportive staff, dedicated students and fellow mentors comprised of some of the industry’s finest (as readers of our Interview Series will recall) put her in good company at the virtual school.

Gobelins l’ecole de l’image

There is arguably no better place to learn the art of animation than in Paris’ Latin Quarter at Gobelins l’ecole de l’image. Known just as much for its grueling entrance exam (that includes multiple rounds of drawing tests) as for its renowned instruction, the visual arts school has been producing true masters of the craft since 1975 and is considered an industry benchmark. Working with the crème de la crème of emerging artists, the program develops students’ story telling abilities through images and movement within its animation programs. The work that Gobelins students create is nothing less than astounding and it’s little surprise that the world’s elite studios including Disney and DreamWorks look to Gobelins’ prestigious lineup when acquiring new talent.

VanArts

The city of Vancouver is known for many things like its polite people, pristine landscape, cultural diversity and beloved NHL hockey team, the Canucks. It’s also home to a slew of VFX, game and film studios that beckon animators to the aptly-dubbed “Hollywood North” (despite its perpetual rainy season). It’s little wonder, then, that a healthy dose of animation training schools have cropped up around the city to nurture the burgeoning production mecca north of the boarder. And one of them is particularly hard to beat.

ANOMALIA

What do you get when you mash up a few entrepreneurial Czech 3D artists with a veteran ensemble of international animators and a diverse group of hungry animation students? In a word, ANOMALIA. Its seasonal workshops form a unique blend of professionally-oriented 3D animation training that fills the void between the classically-focused education found elsewhere in its Central European region and the modern form of the craft employed for the world’s stage.
