What makes an animation school program “the best” depends on a variety of factors. Some college ranking websites may consider cost and convenience first, but many of the most reputable agencies will consider factors that could affect the quality of the school or program. Some common factors include program offerings, faculty resources, graduation and retention rates, financial resources, student selectivity, and peer assessment.
In Iowa, a number of the state’s 60+ accredited colleges and universities made the list of best schools. Thanks to an increasing demand for top talent, many of these schools now offer programs for animators and other digital artists. Many of the state’s art schools, colleges, and traditional universities can be found in principal cities such as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Dubuque. You can also find schools for animator’s in smaller cities such as Cedar Falls and Clinton. One of the best is located in Des Moines.
Drake University (Des Moines) offers degrees such as a B.A. in Studio Art, B.A. in Graphic Design, a B. F. A. in Studio Art, and a B. F. A. in Graphic Design. These programs require the completion of 2D and 3D design, drawing, digital production, and other specific courses for animators.
Other schools that offer some of the best animation programs around include the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Ashford University in Clinton, (Computer Graphic Design, Animation Track), and Loras College in Dubuque (Integrated Visual Arts with Animation Studies). Eastern Iowa Community College (Davenport) and Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville also offer excellent programs for animators.
