America is home to more than 280,000 salaried graphic designers and thousands of freelancers. The demand for graphic designers is so high that a 13 percent increase in employment is expected by 2018. To meet the growing demand for graphic designers, schools across the country have added graphic design programs or expanded existing ones. This means that today there are literally hundreds of programs to choose from in any given region. In the American Southwest, Arizona is a good option because it is home to several top schools that offer some of the country’s best graphic design programs.
Arizona is home to more than 80 accredited colleges and universities. They offer everything from agriculture and engineering to art and design programs. While most Arizona schools are quite competitive and considered high quality, several are standouts among college ranking agencies. These agencies rank colleges based on the number of program offerings, graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources (student-teacher ratio), financial resources, and student selectivity. Forbes, Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report are the most popular ranking “agencies” today.
Arizona’s best schools, including the best schools for graphic designers, can be found in major cities such as Phoenix and Tucson. These schools scored high in all areas, so they are often included on multiple “best schools” lists. Surprisingly, several of the state’s top art and design schools do not offer graphic design programs. While Arizona State University-Herberger Institute for Design and Arts and the University of Arizona-School of Art offer a variety of art and design programs, the Art Center College of Design is one of the few art schools that offer graphic design programs. Fortunately, it is considered one of the best in the southwest.
