There are more than 286,000 salaried graphic designers in the U.S. and thousands more are independent contractors, freelancers, or business owners. The demand for graphic designers is so high, the Bureau of labor Statistics predicts a 13 percent increase in employment by 2018. To meet the demand, schools across the country have increased the number of graphic designed programs offered or revamped existing ones. This means, there are literally hundreds of programs to choose from in any given region. In the southern region, some of the best programs are offered in the state of Georgia.
Georgia is home to more than 130 accredited colleges and universities and many are popular among aspiring designers and other artists. The best of the best, however, are determined by a number of college ranking agencies that release several official “best of” lists each year. Which schools eventually end up on the list depends on several factors. The number of program offerings, graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources (student-teacher ratio), financial resources, and student selectivity are at the top of the list in the evaluation process.
Although not surprising, a number of Georgia schools made the list. They can be found in large cities such as Atlanta or smaller cities such as Carrollton. Just a few of Georgia’s best graphic design programs are offered at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.
