Some states have experienced slower growth in the graphic design industry than others, but overall, the graphic design industry has grown at a steady pace since 2002. In 2002, the U.S. was home to 141,830 salaried graphic designers. Today, the country is home to 191,000 salaried graphic designers, along with thousands of independent designers working in all industries from advertising to technology.
To keep up with the demand for talented graphic designers, many colleges and universities have added degree programs for graphic designers to their list of offerings. Others have expanded existing programs to accommodate more students. The result is a large collection of competitive graphic design programs that can be found at many art and design schools, technical schools, community colleges, and traditional colleges across the U.S.
While finding a graphic design program is easy these days, finding the best graphic design programs may take little digging. Fortunately, a number of respected organizations have done most of the work for you. Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report, and Forbes are just a few. They decide which schools deserve a spot on the list based on factors such as student selectivity, number of program offerings, peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, financial resources, and faculty resources.
