Scope of Program:
All B. F. A. candidates at the Cleveland Institute of Art complete the Foundation program, which includes courses in 2D and 3D design, design woodshop, color, drawing and digital art and design. Animation students concentrate on 3D modeling and animation, 2D and 3D composition, integrated media, narrative production, screenwriting, sound design, 3D character animation, digital texture and lighting, web practice and presence and visual organization and media. All students create a B. F. A. thesis and presentation.
Communication Design students concentrate on design, typography, visualizing information, advertising art direction, information architecture, graphic user interface, design for communication, publication design, photography and handmade books. All students create a portfolio and B. F. A. thesis and complete a B. F. A. seminar.
Game Design students complete coursework in integrated media, digital art and design, digital texture, game design, game media production, 3D modeling, animation, level design, sound design, storyboarding, screenwriting and 2D and 3D compositing. All students create a B. F. A. thesis and exhibition.
Illustration students take courses in visual organization and media, integrated media, studio projects, illustration for publication, layout, professional standards in illustration, graphic novels and sequential art, character design and development and narration, sequence and storytelling. All students create a final project, portfolio, B. F. A. thesis and B. F. A. exhibition.
T.I. M. E. – Digital Arts students focus on digital art and design, 2D and 3D design, screenwriting, coding, hacks and space, media art in the social sphere, programming for artists, experimentation in electronic arts, integrated media and screenwriting. All students create a B. F. A. thesis and exhibition.
Video students concentrate on digital art and design, digital photography, animation, experimental video, lighting, motion graphics, moving image in space, narrative production, web media production, video, sound design, screenwriting and 2D and 3D design. Students may participate in the Cleveland Institute of Art's annual student film festival.
A portfolio is required with the application for admission. Art scholarships and institutional grants are available. Ohio residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored scholarships and grants.
