If you want to be a game designer, you couldn’t have picked a better time to pursue your dream. Today’s designers have more degree options than ever before, and many of these programs prepare graduates for careers in areas other than games. A good example is the Computer Science (CS) degree. Many of today’s top CS programs offer concentrations in Game Development, Game Programming, Game Design and more, with a computer science core that remains sold. This means, CS with Games graduates will leave the program with skills that can also lead to in-demand careers such as computer engineering or programming, software development, computer networking, web development, information security and more. This type of versatility is attractive to employer’s, which can make landing a top position in game design or other area that much easier.
This month, we decided to focus on CS programs with a Games component, just so you know all your options. We are pleased to announce that Grand Canyon University and University of London have two innovative programs that every aspiring game designer should know about. Here you go.
University of London – London, England UK
The University of London has just announced plans to launch a BS in Computer Science that can be completed entirely online. Subject areas of focus include Game Development, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Web Development, and Data Science. The school says that students will develop their abilities to solve complex problems, nurture their innovation and creativity, and develop real-world computer science skills by building their own software projects.
The program is a collaboration between the University of London and its member institution Goldsmiths, University of London, and online platform Coursera. According to University of London, the BS in CS is the first undergraduate degree program available on Coursera, one of the world’s leading online education providers.
The online program is “designed to fit around work, family, and other commitments,” says the school, with the option to study on your own schedule from anywhere in the world via the web or a mobile device. The program, which consists of 23 modules, may be completed in three to four years.
The new BS in CS is scheduled to go live in April 8, 2019, with students able to register now through March 4, 2019. The program will be offered twice per year, in April and October, and it is open to all.
Established in 1836, the University of London is one of the largest, most diverse universities in the UK with over 120,000 students in London, and 50,000 additional students studying across 180 countries. The school offers more than 3,700 academic programs across dozens of departments and schools.
Grand Canyon University – Phoenix, Arizona
In July 2014, Grand Canyon University (GCU) opened the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET), launching its Computer Science and Information Technology programs that fall. The school celebrated its first CS graduating class in April 2018, which became the biggest commencement run ever for the University. The class consisted of 15 CS graduates, including eight specializing in Games and Simulation Development, five in Big Data Analytics, and two in Programming. Graduates of the Games Emphasis had the opportunity to create everything from text-based video games and virtual board games to a throwback video game called “Anachronistic Detective: Quest for the Lost Slushee.”
The “new” BS in CS with an Emphasis in Game and Simulation Development consists of 128 total program credits that can be completed in 15 weeks. According to CSET, the program “combines lecture and theory with practice and play. Coursework examines human and computer interaction while hands-on labs reinforce learned principles.” The curriculum “explores multifaceted technology concepts, such as artificial intelligence in gaming and simulation, 2D and 3D graphics and operating systems.”
Students study topics such as Business Planning and Information Security, Professionalism and Ethics in Technology Communication, Principles of Compiler Design, Game Design and Play, Object Oriented Programming and Mobile Game Development. The program culminates with a capstone that allows students to present an applied project that exhibits students’ competency in the functions of computer science.
The on-campus CS in Game and Simulation Development prepares students for careers in Game Development, Computer Modeling, and Graphic Visualization. Applications for fall 2018 are now being accepted.
Established in 1949, Grand Canyon University is a private Christian University that serves nearly 15,500 students at its main campus in Phoenix, and nearly 60,000 at GCU online. The school offers more than 200 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs through nine colleges. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and its predecessor have accredited GCU continually since 1968.
