Scope of Program:
Visual Arts students at Marshall University who choose the Graphic Design emphasis complete foundation courses in design, drawing and digital media. Students must then pass a portfolio review to be admitted to the major. Accepted students focus on type and image, illustration, art history, typography, design for multimedia, 3D graphic design, sign combinations and visual structure, directed study and professional practices. All students complete an advanced graphic design sequence and apprenticeship and create a portfolio.
Master's degree candidates in Art complete art seminars, art history courses and independent studio work. All students must pass portfolio reviews after nine and 18 credit hours of study to continue in the program. Students must pass comprehensive examinations and create a M. A. exhibition.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. A. program. Merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Residents of West Virginia may apply for state-sponsored scholarships and grants. Residents of border counties may be eligible for metro tuition rates.
