Scope of Program:
B. A. and B. F. A. candidates at New Jersey City University take core art courses in drawing and composition, 2D and 3D design, art history and contemporary art. The B. A. and B. F. A. programs are similar, but B. F. A. candidates must complete additional coursework, participate in a B. F. A. seminar and pass a junior year portfolio review. Digital Design and Illustration students focus on illustration, typography, digital illustration, web design, information design and communication design techniques. All students create a portfolio. Graphic Design students concentrate on typography, illustration, drawing, digital illustration, advertising and package design, book and magazine design, web design, information design and corporate publications design. All students create a portfolio. Illustration students complete coursework in technical drawing, rendering, life drawing, digital illustration and drawing for design. All students create a portfolio and complete an illustration research project.
Students in the Media Arts program focus on film history, foundations of media design, digital media, sound and video production and post-production, film aesthetics, 3D computer animation, video field production and editing, multimedia production and interactive media authoring. Co-ops are available.
M. A. and M. F. A. candidates concentrate on studio art, aesthetic and critical perspectives, art of diverse cultures, electronic works, spatial illusion and contemporary art. Students create a thesis exhibition and accompanying research paper.
Need-based, art and merit scholarships are available. New Jersey residents who can demonstrate substantial financial need may be eligible for New Jersey Tuition Aid Grants.
