Scope of Program:
B. F. A. candidates in Communication Design at Parsons The New School for Design begin their studies with studio and lab work in image, time, creative computing and world art and design. They continue with typography, print design, spatial graphics, information design, book design, graphic design history and editorial design. Students in the Design and Technology program may choose from three emphases: Animation, Game Design and Motion Graphics and Interaction Design. All students complete image, time, creative computing and world art and design studio and lab courses, then focus on emphasis specific coursework such as new media, computer art, prototyping and interaction studio. All students complete an internship and create a thesis project. Illustration students begin their studies with coursework in 2D and 3D design, drawing and world art and design, then concentrate on visual culture, visual narrative, painting, color theory, pictozine and professional practices. All students create a thesis project.
M. F. A. candidates in the two-year Design and Technology program focus on creativity and computation, design for this century, interface, interaction, narrative, computation, game design, animation, motion graphics, web media, visual design, group critiques, studio visits and interdisciplinary collaborative projects. All students create a thesis exhibition.
Applicants to the B. A., B. F. A. and M. F. A. programs must submit a portfolio. B. A. and B. F. A. applicants must also complete the Parsons Challenge, an at-home art and writing exercise. M. F. A. applicants to the Design and Technology program must complete an interview. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available. New York state residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored scholarships. Qualifying students may also apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program.
