Scope of Program:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a Fine Arts Specialization in Communication Design for undergraduates. All students begin with foundation studio courses in drawing, art history, communication drawing, typography, design process and computer graphics. Students must pass a portfolio assessment to continue in the major after basic courses have been completed, and pass a second portfolio review during the senior year. Communication Design students continue taking courses in graphic design, digital art and design, print technology and computer graphics. All students must prepare a senior thesis.
Master's degree candidates in Media Arts study history and theory of media arts, web design, brand management, net art, intellectual property, critical research methods, new media, sonic arts, photography and/or cinema. All candidates must pass a portfolio review after the first year of study. Students create a thesis.
Upper division Communication Design students must purchase a MacBook Pro notebook computer. M. F. A. applicants must submit a portfolio. Scholarships are available. Undergraduate students in the southern border states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee who qualify for Pell Grants are eligible for a 20% reduction in tuition. Illinois students are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored scholarships.
