What is the Swiss Animation Scene Like?
Director Claude Barras' My Life as a Courgette was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at this year's Oscars. This stop motion animated film (also known as My Life as a Zucchini), is just one of many animated features produced in Switzerland during the last decade. In 2007, the first feature-length animated film made in Switzerland was released. At a cost of $25.2 million, Max & Co was one of the most expensive domestic productions ever and it put Switzerland on the map in the world of animation.
At the time Nicolas Bideau, head of cinema at the Federal Culture Office, explained, “it was important to highlight the animation scene in Switzerland.” This meant that the second annual Swiss Cinema Day, organized by the national film promotion agency, Swiss Films, with the support of the Federal Culture Office, would include an exhibition of real film sets from Max & Co as well as stills from short cartoons such as Animatou. Since then, animated productions such as A Cat in Paris (nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, Oscars), Kali, the Little Vampire (nominated for Best Animated Short Subject, Annie Awards), and Au revoir Balthazar (won the Swiss Film Award for Best Animated Short Film) have received plenty of press and recognition.
Thanks to a growing animation scene, the demand for talented animators has increased. Fortunately, a number of Switzerland art and design schools, traditional universities, and institutes offer programs that can help graduates get their foot in the door at local studios and those around the world. Some of the best animation school options in Switzerland include:
