Scope of Program:
B. F. A. candidates in Texas State University's Communication Design program complete foundation courses in 2D and 3D design, drawing, color theory, photography, studio art, art history, introduction to communication design, imaging, typography and conceptual strategies before they are admitted to the major. They continue with coursework in art direction, branding systems, interactive media, typography, illustration, corporate packaging, environmental graphic design, trademark design and animation. All students must pass a senior exit review in order to graduate.
M. F. A. candidates in Communication Design focus on contemporary issues and criticism, modernism and design, post-modernism and typography, visual communication theory, professional practice, mobile and social media, web design, art direction digital imaging, international perspectives in typography, the experimental book and information design. All students must pass a mid-program portfolio review and oral examination and create a thesis.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Texas residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants, tuition waivers and scholarships.
