1. Aardman Academy, Bristol, England, UK
Aardman Academy

Aardman Academy (Aardman) has been training animators since 2000. The academy provides in-person and online programs than can be completed in anywhere from four weeks to eight months. Examples include the four week Stop Motion, Model Making, and CG Flair programs; Stop Motion Character Animation (five weeks); Scriptwriting Professional (eight weeks); Stop Motion 1 and 2 (12 weeks); and Stop Motion Film Production (eight months). 

Across programs, students benefit from courses taught by industry animators and directors; workshops; and partnerships with the experimenta.l. animation lab at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, and Royal College of Art (RCA), among others. Upon completion of the programs, students will participate in a graduation ceremony at Aardman’s Gas Ferry Road Studios. In addition to Aardman Animations, program alumni have been hired at places such as Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Cartoon Saloon, LAIKA, Framestore, Passion Pictures, Netflix, Lupus Films, Mackinnon & Saunders, Blinkink, and Nexus Studios. 

2. National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield – Buckinghamshire, England
National Film and Television School

National Film and Television School (NFTS) is home to Beaconsfield Studios, making it the only UK Film School with its own in-house television and film studio. The school also houses several advanced paths to study animation. Options include the Directing Animation MFA; the Animation for Film and Games MA; and Model Making for Animation MA program provided in partnership with Mackinnon and Saunders, with course collaborators from Aardman. Across programs students benefit from hands-on workshops; collaborative projects with students from other NFTS majors; workshops; and extensive portfolio development activities. 

The culminating experience for all programs is the production of a market-ready animated film. Alumni are routinely hired at places such as Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Amazon, Blinkink, BBC, Animortal Studio, Mackinnon & Saunders, Aardman Animations, Time Based Arts, and ITV. 

3. Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigsburg, Germany
Film Academy Baden-Württemberg

The Animation Institute at Film Academy Baden-Württemberg (FABW) trains students in animation, games, visual effects, directing, and interactive media. Established in 2002, this competitive institute houses an Animation diploma program with specializations in Animation Directing; Concept Art; and Character Animation. The institute’s VFX diploma program also provides animation training. Highlights across programs include courses led by award-winning industry professionals; hands-on workshops; collaborative projects; and the participation in the annual FMX - Film and Media Exchange conference.

Programs culminate with a final project and presentation. Graduates have secured roles at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Weta FX, Pixar, Framestore, Mackevision, and Pixomondo.

4. Animum Creativity Advanced School, Malaga, Spain
Animum Creativity Advanced School

Animum Creativity Advanced School (Animum) is a 100% online digital art school that provides vocational and master’s degree programs across the film and games fields. Programs are 15, 39, or 48 months. Options include Concept Art; Character Concept Art; Concept Art of Scenarios and Characters; Concept Art and 3D Scene Modeling; and Concept Art and 3D Character Modeling. Across programs, students benefit from interactions with tutors and guest speakers from Disney, Sony Pictures, Gameloft, and Weta FX, among others; workshops; and real-world production experience.

5. La Poudrière, Valence, Drome, France
La Poudrière

La Poudrière is part of a major animation center that shares a campus with studios such as Fargo Studio and Folimage Studio. One of just three film schools recognized by the French Ministry of Culture, the school houses several paths to study animation. Options include a two-year Author Director of Animated Film (ADAF) diploma program, and certificates in Creating the Storyboard for an Animated Film; Writing for Animation; and Scriptwriting and Concept Development. The ADAF program culminates with a portfolio consisting of several market-ready films. Short programs conclude with a final project. 

La Poudrière graduates enjoy a near-perfect 98% employment rate. To date, they have produced over 280 films and TV shows. Several alumni have earned the Cesar Award. Equivalent to an Oscar, the Cesar France’s highest film honor. Companies that routinely hire La Poudrière graduates include Xilam Animation, TeamTO, Folimage Studio, Les Films du Nord, Fargo Studio, and Sacrebleu Productions.

6. Lightbox Academy, Madrid, Spain
Lightbox Academy

Lightbox Academy (Lightbox) is a Houdini Certified school founded by Lightbox Animation Studios. In 2023, the studio launched Arxlight Pictures in partnership with Austria's Arx Anima, leading to additional opportunities for animation students to gain real-world production experience. Lightbox program options include specialized master’s degrees in Animation; 2D Animation or 3D Animation; 3D Modeling; Illustration and Concept; and VFX. All students benefit from flexible access to state-of-the-art production facilities; and access to more than 2,000 partner companies for internships, projects, and employment. 

Programs culminate with an industry-ready film and professional portfolio. A near-perfect 98% of Lightbox Academy alumni land roles in the industry soon after graduation. 7. The Game Assembly, Malmo, Sweden
The Game Assembly

The Game Assembly (TGA) is a Houdini Certified School with locations in Sweden and the UK. The school houses a Game Animator diploma program that emphasizes collaboration. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to work in cross-disciplinary teams to create several playable games. This immersive 30-month program also takes place in a studio-like environment, with a mandatory 30-week internship at a real game design studio. Many of these internships lead to employment. 

Graduates are routinely hired at places such as Electronic Arts (EA), Massive Entertainment (a Ubisoft Studio), Guerilla Games (PlayStation Studios), Avalanche Studios Group, Larian Studios, and Cloud Imperium Games. 

8. Trazos School of Digital Arts, Madrid, Spain
Trazos School of Digital Arts

Trazos School of Digital Arts (Trazos) is a Houdini, Toon Boom, and Apple Authorized Training Center. The first school of its kind in Spain, Trazos also has partnerships with more than 1,500 companies in the creative sector. Examples include Gameloft, Framestore, HP, Ubisoft, and Foundry. For aspiring animators, Trazos has a two-year Animation BA program, and an advanced master’s for students who have already completed a Higher National Diploma (HND). FX Barcelona Film School

FX Barcelona Film School (formerly FX Animation) is an Unreal Academic Partner and the first school to integrate virtual production into its training programs. For animators, the school provides several paths of study. Options include a bachelor’s in Digital Arts with a specialization in 3D Character Animation; a double degree in Concept Art and 2D Animation; and a master’s degree in 3D Animation Film. All programs highlight project-based learning with focused coursework in animation for animated and live-action films; cross-disciplinary training; experiential learning opportunities such as internships; and participation in film festivals.

The Department of Animated Film (KAT) at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) houses bachelors, masters, and certificate programs in Animated Film. All programs take place in a hands-on professional studio environment. Other highlights include access to state-of-the-art production equipment in Studio FAMU; small class sizes; courses taught by industry professionals; and internship opportunities. The culminating experience for the programs is a short animated film and presentation at FAMUFEST. 

FAMU alumni won at least six Oscars and secured positions at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Pixar, DNEG, Lucasfilm, DreamWorks, Weta FX, Disney, Alkay Animation Prague, and MAUR Film. 

11. ESCAC, Barcelona, Spain
ESCAC

ESCAC provides two flexible programs for animators seeking an advanced degree. The broad Master in Film and Screen Studies explores animation, game design, experimental filmmaking, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), interactivity, VR cinema, documentary filmmaking, and television production. The Master in Cinematography allows students to study animation through mentoring and focused electives in digital animation, VFX, and live-action film. Programs culminate with the Master’s Degree Final Project (TFM) in written and/or audiovisual format. Graduates have been hired at ESCAC’s own production company Escandalo Films, and places such as Netflix, Suma Content, Alicante Films, and FLIMAX. 

12. L'idem Animation School, Barcelona, Spain
L'idem Animation School

With three campuses in Barcelona, France, and Madrid, L'idem Animation School (L’idem) is a Toon Boom Center of Excellence that provides master’s degrees in 2D Animation; 3D Animation; Concept Art; and 3D Generalist. Program highlights include small class sizes; real-world team projects in a simulated studio environment; participation in the L’idem International Animation Summit, which attracts studios from around the world; required internships; immersive workshops; and partnerships with places such as Ubisoft, DreamWorks, Epic Games, Paramount, Framestore, Illumination, and Gameloft.

13. 9Zeros, Barcelona, Spain
9Zeros

9Zeros is the animation branch of ECIB - Escola de Cinema de Barcelona (The Barcelona Film School). As part of ECIB, 9Zeros is an Authorized Auto Desk Training Center and Avid Learning Partner that provides more than a dozen animation degrees and short training programs. Examples include the Animation diploma, and master’s degrees in Character Design, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Concept Art and Character Design, Storyboarding, VFX, and Stop-Motion—the oldest program of its kind in Spain. Across programs students benefit from courses taught by veteran animators; workshops; access to state-of-the-art production facilities; visiting artists; and professional internships.

14. Copenhagen Academy of Digital Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen Academy of Digital Arts (CADA) houses a competitive 3D Digital Artist program that provides in partnership with Abertay University. Leading to a BA, the program explores animation, VFX, new media, and games. The program features courses that take place in an immersive, hands-on learning environment; small class sizes; instructors with extensive experience in the industry; and a mandatory internship. The program culminates with an independent thesis project and professional showreel. Graduates have secured roles at places such as Pixar, Rockstar Games, Disney Animation Studios, Ghost VFX, and IO Interactive. 

15. Pepe School Land, Barcelona, Spain
Pepe School Land

Pepe School Land (Pepe School) is a competitive institution that accepts just 20 students per year. With dedicated production facilities and an immersive curriculum, the school provides a Modeling, Animation, and Storytelling (MAN) program that alternates with a DemoReel Creation (CDR) workshop. This means, one year only the MAN program will be taught with 20 students. The next year, only the CDR course will be taught with no more than six students. The MAN program focuses on mastering the latest 3D software, narrative, and 3D animation. The CDR workshop focuses on producing a professional demo reel. Graduates can be found at places such as Pixar, Gameloft, Paramount, Aardman Animations, Valve Corporation, and Crema. 

16. Universal Arts School, Valencia, Spain
Universal Arts School

Universal Arts School (UArts) is a Houdini Certified School and Adobe Authorized Training Center that provides specialized, career-focused programs that prepare students for immediate entry into the entertainment industry, among others. With locations in Valencia, Spain and Hollywood, California, the school has an Animation program with the following options: bachelor’s, master’s, dual master’s, diploma + certification, 12-month certificate, and two-week training essentials diploma + certification. The two-week program is available on campus, while all other pathways are delivered 100% online.

PIXL VISN Media Arts Academy provides an accelerated path to become an animator or VFX artist. ESDIP Escuela de Arte

ESDIP Escuela de Arte (ESDIP) provides several paths to study animation. Options include three-year diplomas in Animation Film, General Animation, and Artistic, Graphic and Digital Creation; a two-year 3D Animated Cinema and Character Creation master’s; and one-year Introduction to 2D Animation program. 

Across programs, students have opportunities to work on short films at the school’s in-house production company ESDIP Animation Studio. Programs culminate with a portfolio and professional film. 19. Games Academy, Berlin, Germany
Games Academy

Games Academy is Germany’s first and only college to focus solely on computer and video game production. It is also the oldest state-recognized games school in EuropeIn 2019, the school merged with MDH University of Applied Sciences to create one of the largest collections of game design programs in Berlin. This includes a two-year Digital Artist (GA) diploma program that explores color and light, 3D Animation, and 3D Modeling. Other program highlights include courses taught by industry professionals; the opportunity to earn two diplomas in 2.5 years by adding the Game Design (GA) program; and the option to complete the program entirely online or on campus.

PlaygroundSquad (PSQ) is an Unreal Academic Partner and Authorized Sony Training Center that accepts just 40 students each year. Also part of PlayStation First, the school houses a Game Artist diploma program that explores animation, VFX, 3D modeling, graphics, and more. Other program highlights include a mandatory six-month internship at a game studio in Sweden or abroad; ​three different projects where students work in teams to develop playable games; and access to state-of-the-art production tools such as PlayStation hardware. 

The program culminates with the Degree Thesis in Game Development sequence, worth 45 HVE credits. PSQ graduates are frequently hired at places such as Electronic Arts (EA), Ubisoft, Farshark, Starbreeze Entertainment, Deadghost Interactive, Embark Studios, Section 9 Interactive, and Aurora Arts Studio.
