1. Vancouver Film School, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Vancouver Film School

Vancouver Film School (VFS) is home to North America’s first multimedia program. Launched in 1994, the program led to the development of several additional options including 3D Animation and Visual Effects (VFX); Classical Animation; and Animation Conception Art. Leading to a diploma, these intensive 12-month programs are Houdini Certified and studio-based. Students can also enroll in the preparatory bridge program—Foundation Animation. This program allows students to build foundational skills for four months before applying to any of the VFS diploma programs. 

Diploma-seeking students will graduate with a professional portfolio of their best work and a master demo reel. Graduates can be found at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Paramount, DreamWorks, Netflix, Pixar, DNEG, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Electronic Arts (EA), and Warner Bros.

2. Aardman Academy, Bristol, England, UK
Aardman Academy

Aardman Academy (Aardman) has been training animators since 2000. The academy provides in-person and online programs than can be completed in anywhere from four weeks to eight months. Examples include the four week Stop Motion, Model Making, and CG Flair programs; Stop Motion Character Animation (five weeks); Scriptwriting Professional (eight weeks); Stop Motion 1 and 2 (12 weeks); and Stop Motion Film Production (eight months). 

Across programs, students benefit from courses taught by industry animators and directors; workshops; and partnerships with the experimenta.l. animation lab at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, and Royal College of Art (RCA), among others. Upon completion of the programs, students will participate in a graduation ceremony at Aardman’s Gas Ferry Road Studios. In addition to Aardman Animations, program alumni have been hired at places such as Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Cartoon Saloon, LAIKA, Framestore, Passion Pictures, Netflix, Lupus Films, Mackinnon & Saunders, Blinkink, and Nexus Studios. 

3. National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield – Buckinghamshire, England
National Film and Television School

National Film and Television School (NFTS) is home to Beaconsfield Studios, making it the only UK Film School with its own in-house television and film studio. The school also houses several advanced paths to study animation. Options include the Directing Animation MFA; the Animation for Film and Games MA; and Model Making for Animation MA program provided in partnership with Mackinnon and Saunders, with course collaborators from Aardman. Across programs students benefit from hands-on workshops; collaborative projects with students from other NFTS majors; workshops; and extensive portfolio development activities. 

The culminating experience for all programs is the production of a market-ready animated film. Alumni are routinely hired at places such as Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Amazon, Blinkink, BBC, Animortal Studio, Mackinnon & Saunders, Aardman Animations, Time Based Arts, and ITV. 

4. Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigsburg, Germany
Film Academy Baden-Württemberg

The Animation Institute at Film Academy Baden-Württemberg (FABW) trains students in animation, games, visual effects, directing, and interactive media. Established in 2002, this competitive institute houses an Animation diploma program with specializations in Animation Directing; Concept Art; and Character Animation. The institute’s VFX diploma program also provides animation training. Highlights across programs include courses led by award-winning industry professionals; hands-on workshops; collaborative projects; and the participation in the annual FMX - Film and Media Exchange conference.

Programs culminate with a final project and presentation. Graduates have secured roles at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Weta FX, Pixar, Framestore, Mackevision, and Pixomondo.

5. Nanyang Polytechnic, Ang Mo Kio, Singapore
Nanyang Polytechnic

The School of Design and Media (SDM) at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) is home to the Animation, Games and Visual Effects (VFX) diploma program. A unique component of the program is the mandatory 24-week internship, which provides the opportunity to work with major studios such as Pixar, Weta FX, Lucasfilm, Ubisoft, and Disney. Other program highlights include specializations in Animation, Games or Visual Effects; hands-on projects with industry partners; access to state-of-the-art production facilities; and pathways to four-year degrees at places such as DigiPen and University of the Arts Singapore (UAS). 

The program culminates with a final project (short film). Graduates have secured roles at places such as Blizzard Entertainment, Lucasfilm, Disney, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Ubisoft Singapore, Netflix, Sony Pictures Imageworks, DNEG, Sparky Animation, Koei Tecmo Singapore, and Mighty Bear Games.

Vancouver Institute of Media Arts

Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (VanArts) is a Houdini Training Partner that provides several paths to study animation. Program options include 2D Character Animation (Toon Boom Harmony), and 3D Character Animation (Maya). These intensive training programs highlight an accelerated 12-month format; on-campus and online delivery; partnerships with places such as Microsoft, Pixologic, Adobe, and Toon Boom; and articulation agreements at four-year institutions such as Fairleigh Dickinson University, Media Design School, and Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Think Tank Training Centre (Think Tank) provides two paths to study animation—the 3D Animation, Visual Effects and Game Art diploma, and a 16-week CG program. The immersive, 64-week diploma program has 12 specializations. Examples include Animation; Visual Effects; Characters and Creatures for Film; Look Development; and Props and Environments for Film. Other program highlights include small class sizes, access to state-of the-art production tools and facilities; hands-on workshops; and one-on-one mentorship.

Animum Creativity Advanced School

Animum Creativity Advanced School (Animum) is a 100% online digital art school that provides vocational and master’s degree programs across the film and games fields. Programs are 15, 39, or 48 months. Options include Concept Art; Character Concept Art; Concept Art of Scenarios and Characters; Concept Art and 3D Scene Modeling; and Concept Art and 3D Character Modeling. Across programs, students benefit from interactions with tutors and guest speakers from Disney, Sony Pictures, Gameloft, and Weta FX, among others; workshops; and real-world production experience.

La Poudrière

La Poudrière is part of a major animation center that shares a campus with studios such as Fargo Studio and Folimage Studio. One of just three film schools recognized by the French Ministry of Culture, the school houses several paths to study animation. Options include a two-year Author Director of Animated Film (ADAF) diploma program, and certificates in Creating the Storyboard for an Animated Film; Writing for Animation; and Scriptwriting and Concept Development. The ADAF program culminates with a portfolio consisting of several market-ready films. Short programs conclude with a final project. 

La Poudrière graduates enjoy a near-perfect 98% employment rate. To date, they have produced over 280 films and TV shows. Several alumni have earned the Cesar Award. Equivalent to an Oscar, the Cesar France’s highest film honor. Companies that routinely hire La Poudrière graduates include Xilam Animation, TeamTO, Folimage Studio, Les Films du Nord, Fargo Studio, and Sacrebleu Productions.

10. CG Spectrum, South Melbourne, Australia
CG Spectrum

CG Spectrum (CG) is a STEM-accredited school with multiple accolades and certifications. Examples include Toon Boom Authorized Training Center; Unreal Training Partner; Houdini Certified School; and Chaos Academic Partner. CG is the only 100% online 2D animation school to hold the Toon Boom designation. For animators, the school provides a number of programs leading to a diploma or bachelor’s degree. In 2023, the studio launched Arxlight Pictures in partnership with Austria's Arx Anima, leading to additional opportunities for animation students to gain real-world production experience. Lightbox program options include specialized master’s degrees in Animation; 2D Animation or 3D Animation; 3D Modeling; Illustration and Concept; and VFX. 12. The Game Assembly, Malmo, Sweden

The Game Assembly (TGA) is a Houdini Certified School with locations in Sweden and the UK. The school houses a Game Animator diploma program that emphasizes collaboration. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to work in cross-disciplinary teams to create several playable games. This immersive 30-month program also takes place in a studio-like environment, with a mandatory 30-week internship at a real game design studio. Many of these internships lead to employment.

Trazos School of Digital Arts (Trazos) is a Houdini, Toon Boom, and Apple Authorized Training Center. The first school of its kind in Spain, Trazos also has partnerships with more than 1,500 companies in the creative sector. Examples include Gameloft, Framestore, HP, Ubisoft, and Foundry. For aspiring animators, Trazos has a two-year Animation BA program, and an advanced master’s for students who have already completed a Higher National Diploma (HND). Capilano University

The School of Animation and Visual Effects (AVFX) at Capilano University (CapU) is an Unreal Engine Authorized Training Center that houses a 2D Animation and Visual Development program. Leading to a diploma, the program highlights courses taught by veteran animators; hands-on experience through internships and other experiential learning activities; and intensive portfolio development. The program takes two years to complete, full-time. For students seeking a shorter program, the School of AVFX has a two-month Animation Fundamentals certificate that covers traditional and computer animation.

FX Barcelona Film School (formerly FX Animation) is an Unreal Academic Partner and the first school to integrate virtual production into its training programs. For animators, the school provides several paths of study. Options include a bachelor’s in Digital Arts with a specialization in 3D Character Animation; a double degree in Concept Art and 2D Animation; and a master’s degree in 3D Animation Film. These intensive, industry-focused programs can be competed 100% online in just one year. Diploma and certificate programs include Digital Animation, and 2D Animation. Diploma students will complete an industry-ready animated short film to graduate. Cégep du Vieux Montréal (CVM) is a Toon Boom Center of Excellence and Houdini Certified School that houses the only Cartooning Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in Montreal. The program incorporates studies in animation, character design, storyboarding, coloring, and environment design. CVM also houses DEC programs in 3D Production and Image Synthesis and 3D Animation. Seneca Polytechnic (Seneca) is a Houdini Certified School and Toon Boom Center of Excellence. Within the institution is the School of Creative Arts and Animation, which provides several paths to study animation. Options include a three-year advanced diploma in Animation with specializations in 2D Animation, Gaming, Digital Animation, and Visual Development; and post-graduate certificates in 3D Animation, Game Art and Animation, and Visual Effects. All programs highlight hands-on curriculums; access to a dedicated state-of-the-art animation lab; and required internships.

The One Academy

The One Academy (TOA) is a Houdini Certified School and Unreal Engine Academic Partner that houses diploma programs in Digital Animation with Game Development, and Visual Effects (Film and Animation). Animation students can also specialize in either Animation or Modeling. Programs are studio-based and industry-focused, with training provided by professional mentors. The Department of Animated Film (KAT) at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) houses bachelors, masters, and certificate programs in Animated Film. All programs take place in a hands-on professional studio environment. Other highlights include access to state-of-the-art production equipment in Studio FAMU; small class sizes; courses taught by industry professionals; and internship opportunities. The culminating experience for the programs is a short animated film and presentation at FAMUFEST. 

FAMU alumni won at least six Oscars and secured positions at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Pixar, DNEG, Lucasfilm, DreamWorks, Weta FX, Disney, Alkay Animation Prague, and MAUR Film. 

23. ESCAC, Barcelona, Spain
ESCAC

ESCAC provides two flexible programs for animators seeking an advanced degree. The broad Master in Film and Screen Studies explores animation, game design, experimental filmmaking, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), interactivity, VR cinema, documentary filmmaking, and television production. The Master in Cinematography allows students to study animation through mentoring and focused electives in digital animation, VFX, and live-action film. Programs culminate with the Master’s Degree Final Project (TFM) in written and/or audiovisual format. Graduates have been hired at ESCAC’s own production company Escandalo Films, and places such as Netflix, Suma Content, Alicante Films, and FLIMAX.

Faculdade Melies (Melies) provides postgraduate certificate programs in Animation Design; 2D Animation; Visual Effects; and Art for Games. Across programs, students have the opportunity to produce original films or games, including a final industry-ready production. Final projects are eligible for submission to the Short Film Promotion Program, which allows student films to be screened at festivals and on streaming platforms around the world. Melies graduates have worked on productions such as Avengers: Infinity War, Game of Thrones, and The Last of Us Part II. Options include diplomas in Animation Art and Design (AAD), and 3D Modeling for Animation and Games (MAG), and the Applied Arts Essentials Animation (AAAD) certificate. Across programs, students benefit from immersive workshops; courses and hands-on projects led by industry professionals; access to state-of-the-art workstations, a virtual reality suite, and the Emerging Technologies Lab; collaborative projects; and internship opportunities. 

To graduate, diploma students will complete the Final Diploma Capstone course. AAAD students will complete a final project. LCV animation graduates are frequently hired at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Framestore, Electronic Arts (EA), Titmouse, and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
