11. Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MCAD) Boston, Massachusetts
Founded in 1873, Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MCAD or MassArt) is home to 2,000 students enrolled in more than 30 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs across several departments. The Animation Department offers a BFA in Animation. The BFA program allows students to engage in a variety of conventional and experimental techniques such as Digitally Generated Animation, Emerging Technologies, Documentary Animation, and Stop Motion.
12. Emerson College, Boston, Massachusetts
Established in 1880, Emerson College is home to around 4,500 students enrolled in more than 50 programs across several departments and schools. The School of the Arts houses the Department of Visual and Media Arts. The Department offers several programs for aspiring animators. Offerings include BA and BFA degrees in Visual and Media Arts with a Specialization in Animation and Motion Media. An MFA in Media Art is also on the menu. The MFA in Media Art includes Computer Animation, Documentary, Experimental Media, Fiction Narrative, Installation, Interactive Art, and Sound Design.
13. University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The University of the Arts (UArts) was founded in 1876 and it is home to around 1,900 students enrolled in 49 programs across two colleges and one division including the College of Art, Media and Design, the College of Performing Arts, and the Division of Liberal Arts. The College of Art, Media and Design houses the School of Film. The School offers several programs for aspiring animators including a BFA in Animation, a BFA in Film + Animation, and a Minor in Animation.
14. Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York
Founded in 1870, Syracuse University (SU) is home to approximately 21,492 students enrolled in more than 400 programs across 12 colleges and schools, and a graduate school. The College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) houses the Department of Transmedia which offers several programs for aspiring animators. Offerings include a BFA in Computer Art and Animation and an MFA in Computer Art. A Minor in Animation is also available.
15. Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey
Established in 1908 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair, Montclair State University is home to 20,022 students enrolled in 300 programs across six colleges and schools. The College of Arts houses the Department of Art and Design which offers a variety of art and design programs. Programs for aspiring animators include a BFA in Animation/Illustration with two Track options. Students may choose the Animation or Illustration Track.
16. School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts
The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) was established in 1876. It is home to more than 600 students enrolled in 12 areas of study in Studio Art. Programs lead to a BFA, MFA, MAT, Combined-degree (BFA + BA/BS), Certificate or Studio Diploma. Programs for aspiring animators include a BFA and MFA in Film + Animation, and a Combined BFA + BA/BS in a major of the students choice. The Combined degree program is offered in cooperation with Tufts University.

Edinboro University has been in existence since 1857. It is home to 6,837 students enrolled 135 degree programs across five colleges and schools. The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is home to the Art Department. The Department offers one program for aspiring animators—a BFA in Applied Media Arts, Cinema. The program covers Animation, Computer Animation, and Film and Video.
18. Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Drexel University was established in 1891 and it is home to 26,359 students enrolled in 200 degree programs across 15 colleges and schools. The Westphal College of Media Arts and Design is home to the Digital Media Department which offers several programs for aspiring animators. Offerings include a BS in Animation and Visual Effects, a Minor in Animation and Visual Effects, and an MS in Digital Media. The two-year MS in Digital Media program offers comprehensive studies in Advanced Digital Design including 3D Modeling, Animation, Interactivity, Gaming and Digital Media History, and Theory and Methods.
19. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) was founded in 1872. It is home to more than 31,000 students enrolled in 250 degree programs across nine colleges and a graduate school. The College of Architecture and Urban Studies houses the School of Visual Arts (SOVA) which offers several programs for aspiring animators. Offerings include a BFA in Studio Art with heavy coursework in 3D Animation and Modeling, Digital Video and Visual Effects, and Digital Painting. SOVA also offers an MFA in Creative Technologies that allows students to design a specific program of study that fits their individual interests.
20. Farleigh Dickinson University, Madison, New Jersey
Established in 1942, Farleigh Dickinson University is home to more than 12,000 students enrolled in 120+ majors across four colleges including Becton College of Arts and Sciences, Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies, Silberman College of Business, and University College. Becton College of Arts and Sciences houses the Visual and Performing Arts Department which offers several programs for aspiring animators. Program offerings include a BA in Film and Animation and a Minor in Animation. The BA program offers two Concentrations including Animation or Video Game Animation.
21. University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut
Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut is home to 31,119 students enrolled in more than 100 undergraduate majors, and 17 graduate degree programs in 86 fields of study. The School of Fine Arts houses the Digital Media and Design Department which offers several programs for aspiring animators. 22. Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts
Hampshire College was founded in 1965 and it is home to 1,400 students enrolled in more than 50 areas of study. Aspiring animators have several programs to choose from including a BA in Animation and Digital Art, a BS in Computer Science with heavy Animation coursework, and a BA in Digital Media, also with heavy Animation coursework. Hampshire College is a member of the Five College Consortium, so students have access to an additional 5,300 courses offered through nearby Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges.
