The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) houses the Visual Communication Design (VCD) Department, home to the Studio BFA (VCD) and the Studio MFA (VCD). SAIC’s Continuing Studies Department also provides a Graphic Design certificate with an emphasis in Print Media. The School of Art and Design at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) houses an interdisciplinary Graphic Design BFA, and the Design for Responsible Innovation (formerly Graphic Design) MFA. The BFA program explores typography, image making, user experience (UX), and research methods. 3. Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri
Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) houses the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts. Within the school are two programs for aspiring graphic designers: the BFA with a major in Communication Design, and the Design BA with a Communication concentration. Students in both programs will complete the first-year requirement, consisting of courses such as Design, Drawing, and 3D Design. The College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) houses the Myron E. Ullman Jr. School of Design. Within the school are two programs for students seeking careers in graphic design. Options include the Communication Design BS and the STEM-designated MDes. The BS features five paid co-op experiences at places such as Nike, Disney, Macy’s, IBM, and Toyota. The School of Design at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) houses the Graphic Design Program, which has both BDes and MDes options. The school also provides an interdisciplinary Design Studies BA. For all students, electives allow students to study different areas outside the School of Design. Students in the MDes will participate in the Basel School of Design Summer Workshops, which takes place at the FHNW HGK Basel Visual Communication Institute in Münchenstein, Switzerland. The College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University (OSU) houses the Department of Design. Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) has a multidisciplinary Communication Design (CD) BFA program that provides access to a variety of degree-enhancing minor options. Students also have the option to personalize their own path of study through available courses, electives, and experiential learning. The College of Design at University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMTC) has several paths to study graphic design. Options include the Graphic Design BFA, and a Graphic Design track for MFA, MS, and PhD students. The College of Design at Iowa State University (Iowa State) is home to the Department of Graphic Design (GD), which houses the only public Graphic Design BFA in the state of Iowa. Other program options include the Experiential Graphic Design MA (MAxGD) and MFA, and a dual GD MFA/Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) MS—provided in partnership with the VRAC Research Center.
