The animation programs at Gobelins Paris (Gobelins) boast a 100% employment rate within six months of graduating. Program options include a 3D Character Animator certificate; the Bachelor or Master in Character Animation and Animated Filmmaking; the 3D Character Animation Bachelor; and the Master in Visual Storytelling. Programs are provided in partnership with CITIA (la Cité de l’Image en mouvement d’Annecy).
VIA University College (VIA) houses The Animation Workshop (TAW)—home to the largest animation festival in Denmark. Launched in 1988, TAW provides short programs in everything from Unreal Engine (one week) to 3D Character Animation (10 weeks). Formal training options include BA degrees in Character Animation; Computer Graphic Arts (CGA); and Graphic Storytelling. All TAW students will gain valuable experience working at a production studio such as Aardman or Illumination.
Bournemouth University (BU) is home to the Faculty of Media and Communication, which houses one of the few research-intensive Animation centers in the UK—the National Center for Computer Animation (NCCA). BU is also one of the few Houdini Certified School’s in the UK. Program options include a BA in Computer Animation and Visual Effects; a 3D Computer Animation MA; an MSc in Computer Animation and Visual Effects; and a Digital Effects MA. Graduates go on to work with major studios such as DreamWorks, Pixar, and EA Games.
The School of Communication at Royal College of Art (RCA) houses MA programs in Animation and Digital Direction. Both options explore animation, games, film, artificial intelligence (AI), media, STEM disciplines, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), theater, and literature. Graduates of the programs have landed positions at independent and major studios such as DreamWorks, Aardman, and Passion Pictures.
RUBIKA provides 2D and 3D Animation programs leading to a BAC+5 (master’s degree). All students have the opportunity to complete several work experiences through partnerships with more than 300 studios such as Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Gameloft, and DreamWorks. Program alumni enjoy a 90% employment rate within a year of graduating. Some of the top hiring companies for RUBIKA animation graduates include Disney Animation, ILM, DreamWorks, Pixar, Illumination, Aardman, and Framestore.
University of the Arts London (UAL) is a Certified Nuke Training Center and an Accredited Toon Boom Center of Excellence. Undergraduate program options include BA degrees in Animation, and Animation and Visual Effects. At the graduate level, UAL students can earn an MA in Animation; Character Animation; or 3D Computer Animation. Graduates are prepared to pursue roles at places such as DreamWorks, Pixar, and Aardman.
ARTFX is a Toon Boom Center of Excellence that houses MA programs in 2D Film Animation and 3D Character Animation. Students have opportunities to work with ARTFX partners such as MPC, Illumination, DNEG, Cinesite, and Mikros Animation. Graduates enjoy a 95% job placement rate within six months to a year of graduating. Program alumni have worked on productions such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ready Player One, and The Lion King.
Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is one of the seven schools at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). The oldest College of Art and Design in Central Switzerland, the school provides two paths to study animation: the Film BA with a specialization in Animation and an Animation MA. Students in the BA program may focus in 2D or 3D Animation. Across programs, graduates often land positions at major film and animation studios, game design studios, advertising agencies, museums, television networks, and universities.
École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques (ESMA) houses an intensive 3D Animation, Cinema and Special Effects program that can be completed in five years. Leading to a bachelor’s + master’s degree, the program culminates with an industry-ready animated short film. Graduates have been hired at major studios such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony Pictures Imageworks, Weta FX, Ubisoft, MPC, Illumination, Aardman, Framestore, and Mikros Animation.
Teesside University Europe’s first Adobe Creative Campus. The school provides ScreenSkills-recognized programs including a BA in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics; BA and MA degrees in Animation, 2D Animation and Stop Motion, and Concept Art; and a SideFX Certified Visual Effects MA. All animation programs culminate with a film sequence or short film. Graduates have been hired at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Rockstar North, Animal Logic, and Imaginarium Productions.
MoPA, the School of 3D Animation, has partnerships with major studios such as DreamWorks Animation, DNEG, Mikros Animation, Reel FX, and Aardman. The school provides a project-based 3D Design, Production, and Animation program that leads to an Expert Diploma (master’s). MoPA graduates are prepared to pursue careers in all areas of animation, film, and television production.
Escape Studios London (Escape Studios) was the first Unreal Authorized Training Center in the UK. Also a Houdini Certified School, Escape Studios provides a BA/MArt in The Art of Computer Animation (2D or 3D); the BSc MSci in Character Creation for Animation, Games and VFX; a 3D Animation MA; and an MA in Character and Creature Creation. Graduates have worked on productions such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Avengers.
University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is an ARRI Certified Film School. Also accredited by the British Film Institute (BFI), the school provides Animation and Games Animation BA programs. At the graduate level, students can earn an Animation MA. Graduates have gone on to create characters such as Peppa Pig and Hey Duggee. Program alumni have also landed roles at partner studios such as Passion Pictures, Cinesite, Blink Productions, Animade, The Mill, Aardman, Black Dog Films, and Fudge Animation.
University of Hertfordshire (UH) provides an extensive list of SideFX accredited programs. Examples include BA degrees in 2D Digital Animation, 3D Animation and Visual Effects (VFX), and Digital Arts for Animation, Games, and Immersion; the BSc in Digital Technologies for Animation, Games, and Immersion; and MA degrees in Animation, 3D Modeling and VFX, and Character and Creature Animation. With a 96.5% employment rate, program alumni have been hired at places such as Sony Pictures Animation, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and Blue Zoo Animation Studio.
Ecole Emile Cohl (EEC) has a Concept Artist program with two specializations including Animated Cinema and Animation Director. Students in both areas will complete a mandatory six-month internship and master industry-standard Animation tools such as Adobe After Effects, Toon Boom Harmony, and TVPaint Animation. The Concept Artist program at EEC takes two years to complete, full-time. Graduates will earn the RNCP Level 7 Title: Artistic Director – Director in Animated Cinema.
Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) has several paths to study animation. Undergraduate options include BA degrees in with tracks in Animation and Illustration. At the graduate level, students can earn a master’s in Animation Design. Across programs, students benefit from partnerships with Adobe, Toon Boom, and Wacom. Graduates are prepared to pursue leadership roles in animation, illustration, live-action films, game art and design, visual effects (VFX), television production, advertising, research, and art education.
Institute of Art, Design + Technology (IADT) Dún Laoghaire is the only school of its kind in Ireland with a specific focus on the technological and creative cultural sectors. Within IADT is the Faculty of Film, Art + Creative Technologies, which houses the Animation BA; 3D Animation BA; and the 3D Animation MA programs. Across programs, graduates have been nominated for Oscars; produced award-winning animated TV series; presented films at Sundance; and landed positions at places such as Weta FX, Brown Bag Films, JAM Media, Cartoon Saloon, and Boulder Media.
Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) has two paths to study animation including the Media Art MFA and PhD. Students in both programs may focus Animation/3D Animation; Experimental Film; or Storytelling; among other areas. All KHM students will have the opportunity to complete four individual projects to be included in their professional portfolios. Graduates are prepared to pursue leadership roles in the entertainment industry, game design, and education.
Haute Ecole Albert Jacques (HEAJ) houses a Bachelor in Graphic Techniques program with options in 2D Digital Animation Drawing; 3D Animated Film; and 3D Visual Effects (VFX). All students will participate in workshops, collaborative projects, and a three-month internship in the final year of the program. Graduates are prepared to pursue titles such as 3D Animator, VFX Artist, and Artistic Director.
Staffordshire University (Stafford) is an Unreal Authorized Training Center that provides a variety of transdisciplinary programs in the creative arts and digital technologies. This includes BA and MA degrees in Animation, and BSc in Computer Games Design with a focus in Animation. Graduates have been hired at places such as Disney, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony, MPC, Brown Bag Films, DNEG, Blue Zoo Animation Studio, Cinesite, and Aardman.
U-Tad (University of Technology, Arts and Design) is a Toon Boon Center of Excellence (COE) that has partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, Sony Interactive, and Electronic Arts (EA). Program options include an Animation BFA—the first official degree in animation taught and designed by top international professionals—and MA degrees in 3D Character Animation, and Production Direction for Animation, Games and VFX. Graduates have gone on to work for studios such as Disney, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony, MPC, Rockstar Games, DNEG and Weta FX.
University of Portsmouth (UoP) is accredited by SideFX as a Houdini Certified School. Program options include an Animation BA; the BSc in Computer Animation and Visual Effects (VFX); and a Computer Animation MSc. Program alumni go on to work at independent and major studios such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Cartoon Network, Sony Pictures Animation, Framestore, MPC, DNEG, The Mill, Kuju Games, Milk VFX, and Centroid Motion Capture.
Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is a school within the University of Edinburgh. An Aardman Academy Partner, ECA is home to the School of Design, which houses Scotland’s oldest Animation BA program. Throughout this award-winning program, students will produce their own industry-ready animated films and games. Graduates have gone on to work for directors such as Wes Anderson and Tim Burton or to launch their own studios such as Wild Child Animation and White Robot. Other program alumni have been hired at places such as LAIKA, Aardman, Cartoon Saloon, Rockstar North, and Framestore.
ISART Digital (ISART) houses a Cinema Animation 3D/VFX program that leads to a master’s degree. Provided at the school’s Paris, France and Montreal, Canada campuses, the program takes place in a professional production studio environment, with opportunities spend one month to a year in Japan at partner universities such as Tokyo University of Technology (TUT) and Niigata Computer College. With a 90% employment rate, graduates have been hired at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony Pictures Imageworks, and DNEG.
BRASSART is home to a five-year 3D Animation and Immersion program leading to certification at year four and a diploma at the end of year five. Provided at most of the school’s 15 campuses, the program culminates with a professional portfolio or demo reel of the student’s best work. BRASSART alumni can be found at places such as Disney Animation Studios, MPC, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Ubisoft, and Mikros Animation.
The School of Innovation and Technology at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) houses a BSc in Immersive Systems Design with a specialization in 3D Modeling. This technology-focused program explores 3D modeling for animation, digital games, visual effects (VFX), and augment and virtual reality (AR/VR). All students have opportunities to work with GSA partners such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Sony. Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in the entertainment and games industries.
The Animation Department at Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE) provides a one-year Animation Drawing Studies certificate; a two-year Classical and Computer Animation Higher National Diploma (HND); and an Animation (Visual Media) BA. Graduates are prepared to pursue leadership roles in the entertainment industry or launch their own studios. BCFE BA alumni have won a total of nine Academy Award nominations, including Richard Baneham and his special effects team for their work on Avatar.
Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) provides two paths BA and MA degrees in Animation. The Animation BA is a project-based program that consists of 12 modules completed over three years. Taught entirely in English, the MA is a two-year program housed in MOME Media Institute. The MOME Animation MA program takes two years to complete, full-time. Animation graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles across the animation, games, film, and television industries.
New3dge has a Creative Media and Entertainment Design program with an option in 3D Animation and VFX. Leading to a master’s degree, the program culminates with an animated production and professional portfolio. With an 87% job placement rate, program alumni are prepared to pursue titles such as 3D Animator, VFX Artist, 3D Generalist, Game Artist, Render Wrangler, Environment Artist, CG Supervisor, 3D Character Artist, Computer Graphics Designer, and Storyboard Artist.
The Cinema and Media Arts Department at Universidade Lusófona provides two paths to study animation: the Digital Animation bachelor which explores 2D, 3D, and traditional animation techniques, and Animation Arts masters, which focuses on producing and directing animated films. Across programs, graduates are prepared to pursue leadership roles in animated filmmaking, VR/AR, animation research, video mapping, animation research, and art education.
Ravensbourne University London (Ravensbourne) has several paths to study animation including BA degrees in Animation; 3D Animation; Character Design and Concept Art; and Motion Graphics. Students in all programs benefit from partnerships with the BBC, Alchemy TV, Territory Studio, Inertia, We Are Seventeen, and ITV Studios. With a 90-96.4% employment rate within six months of graduation, program alumni go on to secure roles in the entertainment, advertising, games, and other creative industries.
The School of Media at HKU University of the Arts (HKU) houses an Animation BA program that provides opportunities to create animations for the Dutch television program Twee voor Twaalf, and present student films at the Netherlands Film Festival or animation festivals such as Kaboom and Playgrounds graduates are prepared to pursue careers in animation for films, game art, animation for television, AR/VR, 3D legal and medical animation, aerospace and military 3D animation, and visual effects (VFX).
École Georges Méliès School France’s only professional training center approved by Epic Games. Also a certified by the Unreal Training Center, the school houses an Animation Cinema master’s degree program that explores the production pipeline for both traditional and digital animation. This five-year program culminates with an industry-ready short film, produced in an environment that simulates today’s major studios. Program alumni are prepared to pursue careers in animation for film, television, and games. Graduates have won VFX Oscars and worked on productions such as The Jungle Book, The Life of Pi, and Passengers.
University of South Wales (USW) houses Film and TV School Wales. A collaborative initiative with Screen Alliance Wales, the school provides an Animation MA, and BA degrees in Animation (2D and Stop Motion) and Computer Animation. Students in all programs benefit from partnerships with interactive entertainment companies such as Epic Games, and internships with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Lucasfilm, and MPC. Graduates have been hired at places such as Sony Pictures Imageworks, DreamWorks Animation, ILM, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Rockstar Games, EA Games, and DNEG.
University of the West of England Bristol (UWE Bristol) is home to Bristol School of Animation, Based at Bower Ashton Studios (part of the UWE Bristol City Campus), the school provides two paths to study animation including the Animation BA and MA. Students in both programs have the opportunity to intern at studios such as Aardman and Rumpus Animation. Graduates are prepared to pursue titles such as Animator, Game Artist, Creative Director, and Storyboard Artist.
Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs (ENSAD) provides both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Animation. The undergraduate program can be completed in three years. Upon completion, students may advance to the two-year graduate program. The bachelor’s program culminates with a final work known as the Big Project. Graduate students will produce a final film known as the Grand Project. ENSAD animation alumni are prepared to pursue leadership roles in the entertainment industry.
L'Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués (LISAA) has partnerships with Illumination, Adobe, Mikros Animation, Wacom, Method Studios, Toon Boom, and Progiss/3DVF. The school also has several paths to study animation including the 3D Animation master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in 2D Animation; 3D Animation; 2D/3D Animation; and VFX. All programs culminate with a professional film and portfolio. Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in the entertainment and games industries.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) is school within University of Dundee. Located in the UK’s first and only UNESCO City of Design, DJCAD has two paths to study animation including the Animation BDes, and the MSc in Animation and VFX. All students will graduate with individual showreels and several group short films showcasing their best work. Graduates are prepared to pursue positions in all areas of animation for film, television, and games. Graduates have worked on major productions such as Game of Thrones, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jurassic World Dominion, and The Mandalorian.
Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester) is a recognized Toon Boom Center of Excellence and Blackmagic Design Education Partner. Within Manchester is the School of Digital Arts (SODA), which has two paths to study animation: the BA and MA in Animation. The BA has a one-year internship component and the MA provides private workspaces and research opportunities. Graduates of the Manchester SODA Animation programs have gone on to work in animation, 3D visualization, VFX production, and architectural visualization. Some program alumni have also launched their own studios.
Norwich University of the Arts (Norwich) has several paths to study animation. Undergraduates can earn a BA in Animation or Animation and Visual Effects. Students seeking a graduate degree can earn an Animation MA. These full-time programs provide opportunities to attend masterclasses and interact with guest lecturers from studios such as Lucasfilm, Universal, Walt Disney Animation, and Warner Bros. Norwich Animation graduates enjoy a 92% employment rate within six month of graduating.
