Gobelins Paris

Gobelins Paris (Gobelins) has been training animators for more than 60 years. Serving more than 2,700 students, the school provides several degree programs in partnership with la Cité de l’Image en mouvement d’Annecy (CITIA). This resource and skills center organizes the International Animated Film Festival and MIFA (International Animation Film Market). At the undergraduate level, degree options include the bachelor’s in Animation and Film Directing; 3D Character Animation; and Audiovisual Production Management (animation, film and television).

Master’s programs include Animated Film Design and Production, and Visual Storytelling. Gobelins students enjoy a 100% employment rate within six months of graduating. They can be found at places sch as DreamWorks, Electronic Arts (EA), Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Pixar, and Illumination. 

2. The Animation Workshop at VIA University College, Viborg, Denmark
The Animation Workshop at VIA University College

Serving more than 20,000 students, VIA University College (VIA) is home to The Animation Workshop (TAW). Launched in 1988, TAW provides a number of paths to study animation. Options include bachelor’s degrees in Character Animation, Computer Graphic Arts, and Graphic Storytelling; and short-programs in 3D Character Animation, Animation Production Manager, Storyboard, and more. Royal College of Art (RCA) is home to the School of Communication. Within the school are two paths to study animation. Options include MA degrees in Animation and Digital Direction. Bournemouth University (BU) is a Houdini Certified School that houses the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA). Part of the Faculty of Media and Communication, the center provides several paths top study animation. Options include the Computer Animation and Visual Effects BA; a 3D Computer Animation MA; the Computer Animation and Visual Effects MSc; and a Digital Effects MA. 5. Supinfocom Rubika, Valenciennes, France
RUBIKA

Supinfocom Rubika provides 3D Animation and FX/VFX/Special Effects specializations leading to a bachelor’s degree in three years and a master’s degree in five. Students will engage in a full five years of apprenticeship culminating with the production of a short animated film. All activities take place in facilities designed to mirror today’s top animation film studios. Other program highlights include work experiences through partnerships across more than 300 studios such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), DreamWorks, Gameloft, and Pixar; multidisciplinary team projects; visiting artists; and participation in festivals, conferences, recruiting events, and portfolio day.

6. ARTFX, Paris, France
ARTFX

With locations in Paris, Lille, Montpelier, and London, ARTFX is France’s first VFX school. Also, a Toon Boom Center of Excellence, the school provides several paths to study animation. Options include MA degrees in 2D Film Animation; 3D and VXF; 3D Character Animation; and Game Art. Across programs, students have opportunities to work with partners such as Mikros Animation, Illumination, DNEG, and MPC. Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art

Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is one of the seven schools at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). The oldest college of art and design in Central Switzerland, the school provides two paths to study animation including a Film BA, and an Animation MA. The Film BA has a specialization in Animation with a focus in 2D or 3D Animation. Program highlights include courses taught by professors who are active in the entertainment industry; access to state-of-the-art production studios; interdisciplinary modules; immersive workshops; and professional internships.

École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques (ESMA) houses a 3D Animation and VFX program that leads to a bachelor’s + master’s in just five years. Students can complete the program in French on all six ESMA campuses, and in English at the Lyon, Montpellier, and Bordeaux campuses. Teesside University the first Adobe Creative Campus in Europe. The school also houses a number of SideFX Certified, ScreenSkills-recognized animation programs. Options include a Visual Effects and Motion Graphics BA; Animation, 2D Animation and Stop Motion, and Concept Art BA and MA degrees; and a Visual Effects MA. All students have the opportunity to participate in Animex—Teesside’s annual international animation and games festival. Guests include Pixar, Rockstar Games, Sony, and Disney, among others. MoPA is one of the world’s first schools dedicated entirely to CGI. Formerly known as Supinfocom Arles, followed by MoPA School of Animation, the school is now a member of the EDH Group. Program options include a master’s degrees in 3D Design, Production, and Animation, and Stop Motion Film Directing and Production. Escape Studios London (Escape Studios) is a Houdini Certified School and the UK’s first Unreal Authorized Training Center. The school also provides an endless number of degree programs and professional training for studios (PTS) certificates for animators. Options include BA and MArt degrees in 2D Computer Animation, Comics and Visual Storytelling, and 3D Computer Animation; a BSc and MSc degrees in Character Creation for Animation, Games and VFX; MA degrees in 3D Animation and Character and Creature Creation; and PTS in 2D Animation, 3D Animation, 2D Character Design, Storyboarding, and Mastering Manga Storytelling: Character, Pages and Narrative Flow. Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) is a Toon Boom, Adobe, and Wacom partner that provides several paths to study animation. Undergraduate options include BA degrees in Illustration and Animation, and CG Animation and Game Design. Graduate options include a Master in Animation Design. Across programs, students will work on projects with IED partners such as Grangel studio; participate in workshops in Florence; and complete an internship or other experiential learning activity. Ecole Emile Cohl (EEC) houses an Animation master’s degree program with a mandatory six-month internship. Other program highlights include hands-on projects and workshops; trips to industry conferences; immersive activities that focus on developing advanced skills in software such as After Effects, Toon Boom, and TVPaint; courses that emphasize scriptwriting for animation and project management; and participation in the annual EEC Job Dating event featuring more than 70 animation, game, and publishing companies. Students will create an animated short film to graduate. University of Hertfordshire

University of Hertfordshire (UH) is a SideFX accredited school that provides numerous paths to study animation. Undergraduate options include BA degrees in 2D Digital Animation; 3D Animation and Visual Effects (VFX); Digital Arts for Animation, Games and Immersion; 3D Game Art and Design; Comics and Concept Art; and Digital Technologies for Animation, Games and Immersion. At the graduate level, the school has MA degrees in Animation; Character and Creature Animation; Concept Art; and 3D Modeling and VFX. Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) launched the Media Arts program in 1990. This project-based program provides two advanced paths to study animation: the MFA and PhD. Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) at the University of Edinburgh is an Aardman Academy Partner and home to the School of Design. Within the school is Scotland’s oldest Animation BA program. Through ECA’s partnership with Scotland Loves Anime, BA students have the unique opportunity to participate in the annual Education in Animation Day, where they can meet with directors, animators and producers from the largest studios in Asia. U-Tad

U-Tad (University of Technology, Arts and Design) provides several paths to study animation. At the undergraduate level, this Toon Boom Center of Excellence (COE) houses an Animation BFA. At the graduate level, students can earn an MA in 3D Character Animation; Production Direction for Animation, Games and VFX; Character Design; Rigging and Character FX; and Digital Compositing for VFX. ISART Digital (ISART) is home to the School of Video Games and Animation 3D-VFX, which has partnerships with more than 500 companies. Examples include Activision Blizzard, DreamWorks, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Ubisoft, and Illumination. The school also houses a 3D/VFX Cinema program that takes place in a professional studio environment. Students will earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s after five years of study. Other program highlights include up to four internships; study abroad experiences at partner schools such Niigata Computer College and Tokyo University of Technology (TUT); and group projects.

The Animation BA program at University for the Creative Arts (UCA) was developed by Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey. Launched in 1972, the BA is Europe’s first animation degree. The School of Media at HKU University of the Arts (HKU) houses an Animation BDes program with the only 3D specialization in the Netherlands. In addition to coursework that explores animating, designing and directing, the program provides opportunities to create animations for the Dutch television program Twee voor Twaalf. Students will also have the opportunity to present final projects and other completed works at events such as the Netherlands Film Festival and Kaboom Animation Festival.

Housed at UWE’s Bower Ashton site (City Campus), the school provides access to maker spaces, and industry-standard production facilities, labs, and studios. For animators, the School of Art provides two paths of study including the Animation BA and MA programs. All students have the unique opportunity to intern at places such as Aardman and Rumpus Animation. The Animation Department at Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE) provides several paths to study animation. Options include an Animation (Visual Media) BA validated by the University of Dundee, Scotland; a two-year Classical and Computer Animation Higher National Diploma (HND); and a one-year Animation Drawing Studies certificate. Across programs, students will collaborate on animated film projects to be screened at the Animation and Games Graduate Showcase. BCFE BA alumni have received nine Academy Award nominations, including Oscar-winner Richard Baneham and his VFX team for their work on the Avatar films. 

Other program alumni have secured roles at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Weta FX, Cartoon Saloon, Brown Bag Films, JAM Media, and Giant Creative.

Méliès School

Méliès School (formerly École Georges Méliès), is a recognized Unreal Training Center that provides animation, visual effects, and virtual production programs. France’s only professional training center approved by Epic Games, the school houses a five-year 2D/3D Animation master’s led by professionals from places such as Illumination and Ubisoft. The curriculum for the program examines the production pipelines for traditional and digital animation, culminating with a market-ready short film. All activities for the program take place in an environment that functions like today’s major studios. 

Graduates can be found at places such as Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Nickelodeon, Sony Pictures Animation, Mikros Animation, Studio Hari, SupaMonk, and Fortiche Production. Program alumni have also won VFX Oscars and worked on adventure/fantasy films such as Life of Pi and The Jungle Book.

Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs (ENSAD)

Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs (ENSAD) houses a five-year master’s degree in Animation. After three years of study, students receive a bachelor’s degree. The bachelor’s cycle culminates with an animated film. Graduate students will complete an animated short in partnership with the Paris Conservatory, along with a study abroad experience, and final (major) project. ENSAD graduates often secure roles at places such as DreamWorks, Ubisoft, Disney, Illumination, Framestore, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Mikros Animation, Illumination, Cartoonbase, and Method Animation.

The School of Innovation and Technology at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) provides several paths to study animation. Options at the undergraduate level include the BSc in Immersive Systems Design with a concentration in 3D Modeling or Games and Virtual Reality. Graduate programs include the Serious Games and Virtual Reality MSc and the MDes in Sound for Moving Image. Across programs students will study animation, audio for film and animation, animated virtual environments, interaction, and digital games. All students have opportunities to work with GSA partners such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Sony.

New3dge houses a Creative Media and Entertainment Design program with specializations in 3D Animation and VFX or Game Art. At the graduate level, students can earn an Animation and Game Design MA with a specialization in Creative Direction or Technical Direction.

Howest University of Applied Sciences houses a Bachelor of Digital Arts and Entertainment (DAE) program with a 3D Animation major. The curriculum for the program covers the entire 3D animation production pipeline along with techniques such as texturing, shading, 3D modeling, sculpting, and rigging. In the second year of the program, students have a week off to take what they have learned so far and participate in a film or game jam. In the three days following the event, students will work in teams of five to produce a game or short film. 

Other program highlights include guest speakers; study abroad trips; and an 18-week senior internship with a partner company or studio. Program alumni go on to land roles with most DAE partners, and at places such as Blizzard Entertainment, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Netflix Animation, DNEG, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Bungie, Ubisoft, MPC, Unity, The Mill, Larian Studios, and Guerilla Games.

Volda University College

The Animation bachelor’s degree program at Volda University College (VUC) is the oldest in the Nordic region. Accepting just 12 students each year, the program is also the most prestigious in the region. The curriculum for the program is studio-based, with a focus on individual and team-based projects combined with lectures and mentoring. Noroff Instituttet (Noroff) provides several paths to study animation. Options include the Bachelor in Interactive Media (Animation); higher professional degree programs in 3D Art and Games Technology with Interactive or Content Creation specializations; and the recently launched Digital Animation, and Game Art and Level Design short programs leading to a certificate. The 3D Art and Games Technology program qualifies students to apply for the bachelor’s degree programs at Noroff partner institutions such as Teesside University, Deakin University, and Southampton Solent University.
