1. University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida
University of Central Florida

University of Central Florida (UCF) is home to Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) and Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA). Both academic units provide several paths to study games. NSCM programs include the Digital Media BA, culminating with a Game Capstone; the Digital Media MA, culminating with a thesis or research project; and a Digital Media minor. The BA has tracks in Game Design, and Web and Interactive Media. FIEA houses the Interactive Entertainment MS with specializations in Art, Production, or Programming. All MS specializations culminate with the Interactive Entertainment Capstone and Digital Portfolio. 

Activities for all programs take place in the Communication and Media Building, which houses state-of-the-art studio and classroom space across 112,000 square feet of space. This includes one of the largest soundstages and motion capture studios on the east coast—Studio 500. Other program highlights include internships at major studios; study abroad opportunities; participation in Esports at UCF; and student clubs such as Game Development Knights, Women’s Gaming Alliance, and Gaming Knights.

Students also have the opportunity to complete the Game Design (GD) or Digital Venture (DV) Practicum. The GD Practicum is an internship (full-time job). The DV Practicum gives students the opportunity to build a start-up. 

NSCM and FIEA graduates have been hired at places such as Disney, Epic Games, Lockheed Martin, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Rockstar Games, Microsoft, Cartoon Network, Google, Blizzard Entertainment, Marvel, Nintendo, Electronic Arts (EA), Warner Bros. Games, Apple, Unity Technologies, Zynga, Sony, Universal, Iron Galaxy Studios, Gameloft, and Blur Studio.

2. Full Sail University, Winter Park, Florida
Full Sail University

The game design programs at Full Sail University (Full Sail) follow an immersive, project-based model with accelerated, year-round schedules. Programs include a Game Development AAS; BS degrees in Game Art, Game Business and Esports, Simulation Engineering, and Game Development; an Interactive Technology BS completion program with a Game Design concentration; a Game Business and Esports certificate; and the Game Design MS.

Program features include opportunities to gain production experience in a real-world studio environment; internships at local studios; access to the state-of-the art Full Sail/Echelon Fit Fitness Technology Lab, the Full Sail/Wargaming.net UX Lab, and the nation’s largest collegiate esports arena; and the option to complete programs on campus or online. 

Undergraduate programs culminate with the project and portfolio. The Game Design MS culminates with a portfolio and presentation. To date, more than 350 Full Sail graduates have been credited on over 30 projects, along with nominations across 20 categories at the 2023 Game Awards. Full Sail alumni can be found at places such as NASA, Insomniac Games, Pixar, Electronic Arts (EA), PBS, Disney, Google, BioWare, Apple, HBO, Nickelodeon, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony, MTV, Google, ESPN, Warner Bros., Unity Technologies, Miramax, Universal Studios, Oracle, Meta, and Bunim/Murray Productions. 

3. University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida

The College of the Arts (COTA) at University of Florida (UF) is home to the Digital Worlds Institute (DW), which has two paths to study games. Options include the Digital Arts and Sciences (DAS) BA (BADAS); a DAS Masters (MiDAS); and the DAS minor. The BADAS and DAS minor can be completed on campus or entirely online. All DW programs provides access to state-of-the-art labs and facilities such as the ORC Lab; The GYM Production and Collaboration HUB; the Virtual Production Studio (VPS); the Reality Lab – the Immersive Technology and Research Lab (Reality Lab); and the Polymodal Immersive Classroom Theater (PICT).

Other DW benefits include professional internships; study abroad experiences; visiting artists and lecturers; and workshops, recruitment events, and open houses through the Agency at UF. Programs culminate with a final project and portfolio. Graduates go on to establish careers at places such as Insomniac Games, DreamWorks, Google, Disney, Microsoft, Bungie, Adobe, Gearbox Software, Apple, Oracle, ESPN, Vu Technologies, and The NFL. 

4. Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida

Ringling College of Art and Design (RCAD) provides several paths to study games. Options include BFA degrees in Game Art and Virtual Reality Development (VRD); a VRD minor; and certificates in Creative Technologies and Virtual Production. Across programs, students will participate in RCAD’s experiential learning initiative—INDEX. Activities include real world projects; volunteering; client competitions; industry critiques by visiting artists; immersive experiences; internships; and participation in the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. 

The Game Art BFA culminates with the Game Thesis Project completed across four courses. The VRD BFA culminates with the VR Thesis/Capstone completed across three courses. Game Art and VRD graduates can be found at places such as Rockstar Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Epic Games, DreamWorks, Riot Games, Blizzard Entertainment, Pixar, Ubisoft, Google, Electronic Arts (EA), Microsoft, Hasbro, Bungie, Apple, Obsidian Entertainment, Netflix, Lucasfilm, Bethesda, Naughty Dog, and Meta. 

5. University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida
University of Miami

The Department of Interactive Media at University of Miami (UM) provides several paths to study game design. Options include BSC degrees in Immersive and Interactive Media; Game Design and Interactive Media minors; and the Interactive Media MFA. The Immersive Media BSC is a joint offering between the Interactive Media, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering departments. All programs provide access to the Novel Experiences Responsible Design Lab (NERDLab). This game design studio focuses on professional development, incubation, mentorship, and innovation. The lab hosts serious games showcases, playtesting events such as NERDLab Arcade, and collaborative independent projects. 

Across programs, students also have access to the Emerging Media Lab, where they can create rapid prototypes of games, AR/VR projects, and interactive installations; the Video Game Club; the Virtual Experience Simulation Lab (VESL); the XR Studio for immersive content creation; and the User Experience Lab. Other program highlights include participation in the Video Game Club; Game Design and Interactive Media minors; the Esports Team and Program; Designer and Developer tracks for the BSC programs; professional internships; and study abroad experiences. 

Programs culminate with a capstone project. Graduates of the Games and other UM programs have been hired at places such as Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, NBCUniversal, Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, Apex Legends, Rumble Entertainment, Crystal Dynamics, ABC, Ford Motor Company, and ESPN.
