Our 2026 rankings of the Top 5 visual effect schools in the Southwest, our fifth annual rankings for VFX. We define the Southwest as Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. For an explanation of ranking criteria, click here.

1. Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas
Texas A&M University

The Visualization program at Texas A&M University (TAMU) allows students to focus in any area through electives and project-based studios. Housed in the School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts (PVFA), the program has options leading to a BS, MS, or MFA. Other program highlights include study abroad experiences in places such as Germany and Italy; professional internships; interdisciplinary research; and participation in the Annual Career Fair. Graduates of the Visualization programs at TAMU have worked on productions such as Black Panther, Encanto, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, and Coco. They can be found at places such as DreamWorks, Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and Disney.

University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) houses several programs for students seeking careers in visual effects. Options include a Film and Media Production MFA (FMP MFA); the Arts and Entertainment Technologies BS (AET BS); a Computer Science BS with a Game Development concentration; and the Radio-Television-Film BA (RTF BA). An RTF minor is also available. Across programs, students benefit from courses taught by active industry professionals; access to state-of-the-art production facilities; professional internships; and career services such as coaching, coursework, and annual job fairs. Graduates have secured roles at places such as Searchlight Pictures, Disney, Electronic Arts (EA), Amazon MGM Studios, Google, DreamWorks, Sony, Paramount, Dell, Lionsgate, Apple, and IBM.

University of Utah (The U) provides two ideal paths to study visual effects: the Computer Science (CS) BS with an Entertainment Arts and Engineering (EAE) emphasis, and a Master of EAE (MEAE) with a Technical Arts track. The EAE emphasis explores areas such as computer-generated special effects, 3D animation, and game design and development. The MEAE Technical Arts track provides specialization options such as Visual Effects and Technical Animation. Programs culminate with a demo reel and/or portfolio. Graduates have been hired at places such as DreamWorks, Microsoft, Blizzard Entertainment, Disney, Nickelodeon, Pixar, NVIDIA, Atari SA, HBO, Bungie, Adobe, and NBCUniversal.

The BYU Center for Animation at Brigham Young University (BYU) provides two paths to study visual effects. Housed in the BYU Center for Animation, programs include an Animation BFA and a Computer Science BS (CS BS) with an Animation and Games emphasis. Both programs explore the technical aspects of VFX through hands-on projects, required courses, and electives. Course examples across programs include 3D Visual Effects; Technical Animation; Lighting for 3D Graphics; Animated Film Production; Materials and Surfacing; and Motion Concepts. Programs culminate with a market-ready short film or game. Graduates are routinely hired at places such as Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, Sony, Riot Games, Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Electronic Arts (EA), Blizzard Entertainment, and Netflix. 

5. University of Colorado Denver, Denver, Colorado

The College of Arts and Media at University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) houses a Visual Arts BFA program with an emphasis in 3D Graphics and Animation. Activities for the program take place in the state-of-the-art Digital Animation Center (DAC). Other program highlights include courses such as Visual Effects, VFX Rigging and Animation, and Character FX; internships; and the opportunity to complete an industry-ready film during an 18-month capstone experience. Student films are presented at the Redline Contemporary Art Center. Films have been screened at more than 300 national and international film festivals across 22 countries, with over 75 Best Animated Short awards in non-student categories. Graduates go on to launch their own studios or secure roles at places such as DreamWorks, HBO, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Disney, Cartoon Network, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., and Pixar.
