Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is home to VR@MIT—a member of the Intercollegiate XR (ICXR) Hackathon Circuit. Along with MIT programs such as the Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) MS, and labs such as the Center for Advanced Virtuality and the MIT.nano Immersion Lab, VR@MIT supports AR/VR/MR education and research. Other AR/VR related programs include the CSE PhD; the Computer Science PhD; and the eight-week xPro certificate in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. MIT graduates go on to land positions at places such as Boeing, Microsoft, Google, Apple, IBM, General Motors (GM), Tesla, Amazon, Meta, Intel, the U.S. Armed Forces, and SpaceX. 

2. Stanford University, Stanford, California
Stanford University

Stanford University is home to the School of Engineering, which houses the Computer Science (CS) Department. Established in 1965, the department provides programs that allow students to design their own specialization. Several official specializations allow students to focus in AR/VR. Specific program options include the Computer Science BS (BSCS), MS (MSCS), and CS PhD. Across programs students have access to courses such as Intro to Virtual Reality and Avatars; How to Make VR: Introduction to Virtual Reality Design and Development; and Coding for Social Good. Students also have to the Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL), and the Virtual + Augmented Reality Design Lab (VR Design Lab), among others. Graduates of the CS Department are routinely hired at places such as such as Apple, Tesla, Microsoft, Google, Walt Disney World, Amazon, Meta, the U.S. Armed Forces, and Oracle.

3. University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California
University of Southern California

The Frontiers of Computing initiative at University of Southern California (USC) is the single largest comprehensive academic initiative in the school’s history. Launched in 2023, Frontiers focuses on areas such as AR/VR, robotics, AI, and gaming. USE also houses the Mixed Reality Lab (MxR); the ICT Virtual Humans Group; and the Extended Reality Lab (XRLab). USC also recently launched the USC Working Group on Scholarly VR, AR, and 3D Modeling. Degree options include the Computer Science BS, MS, or PhD; the Interactive Media and Games MFA; the Arts, Technology, and the Business of Innovation BS; and the Integrated Design, Business, and Technology MS. Graduates of these programs are frequently recruited by the U.S. Armed Forces, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, DreamWorks Animation, Walt Disney, Google, Sony, Microsoft, Amazon, Discovery+, Tesla, United Airlines, Meta, and Disneyland Resorts.  

4. Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) recently became a member of the Virtual Reality Augmented Reality Association (VRARA) in an effort to help advance education, research, and development in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The school also provides several paths to study AR/VR including the Computational Media BS (BSCM); and BS, MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science. All students have the opportunity to work and learn in the GVU Center, which focuses on areas such as AR/VR, wearable computing, gaming, human-computer interaction (HCI), and AI. Labs include the Augmented Environments Lab, and the Prototyping eNarrative Lab (PeN Lab), which focuses on emerging platforms such as AR/VR; simulation and game design; storytelling; and experimental television. Graduates go on to land advanced roles at places such as Boeing, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Cisco, Intel, Tesla, IBM, and Disney. 

5. University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Washington (UW) is the world’s first school to offer an augmented reality capstone course. Program options for students interested in studying AR/VR include the Computer Science BS (CS BS); a combined BS/MS; the Professional Master’s Program (PMP) in CS; and a CS PhD. All Allen School students have the opportunity to take courses and work in interdisciplinary teams at the UW Reality Lab. Across programs, graduates have established careers at places such as Pixar Animation Studios, Microsoft, Disney, Apple, Unity Technologies, Riot Games, Amazon, Epic Systems, Adobe, Google, Dell, Samsung, HBO, Oracle, and Hulu. 

6. Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) houses the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII)—home to the Augmented Design Capability Studio and the Augmented Perception Lab. Students in all AR/VR programs have access to the HCII. Program options include the nation’s very first bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence—the AI BS; BS degrees in HCI and AI; a Robotics Systems Development MS (MRSD); the Professional Master of HCI (MHCI); the HCI PhD;  a Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA); the Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts (BCSA); and a Bachelor of Engineering Studies and Arts (BESA). Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in AR/VR and related fields. Alumni have been hired at places such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Adobe, Pixar, Google, Amazon, Samsung, Meta, Riot Games, Apple, Cartoon Network, and NVIDIA.

7. New York University, New York, New York
New York University

New York University is home to Tandon School of Engineering. This Polytechnic Institute houses the research-intensive Integrated Design and Media (IDM) program, which provides IDM BS and MS programs and an Accelerated BS/MS program. All options provide opportunities to complete internships at places such as Google, Sony Music, and Apple, along with study abroad experiences at NYU Shanghai. Labs include the Future Reality Lab and NYC Media Lab, with partners such as Viacom, NBCUniversal, and Verizon. Tandon and IDM graduates have gone on to land positions at places such as Microsoft, Apple, LG Electronics, Google, Intel, Amazon, Sony Music Entertainment, Meta, IBM, American Express, ABC, Verizon, Tesla, Qualcomm Technologies, EMI Music, Instagram, Simon & Schuster, and AECOM.

8. Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York
Rochester Institute of Technology

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was the first university to offer an undergraduate degree in software engineering. The school also delivered its first fully online program years before any other post-secondary institution entered the online arena. Today, RIT is among a growing number of schools that provide AR/VR-related programs and extensive labs to support them. Program options include the New Media Interactive Development BS, which focuses on adapting digital technologies for AR/VR, wearable devices, and touch interfaces; and the Computing and Information Sciences PhD, which allows students to select a research area such as AR/VR or customize their own. Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in areas from game design to aerospace engineering. Potential job titles include AR/VR Developer, Technical Lead, Game Developer, UX Engineer, and Interactive Developer.

University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) houses several facilities and programs that support education and training in all areas of AR/VR. Facilities include the AR/VR/MR laboratory known as XR Lab@Berkeley; the student-run Extended Reality@Berkeley; and the FHL Vive Center for Enhanced Reality, which sponsors research and applications in AR/VR and AI. Program options include the BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) and the Computer Science (CS) BA. Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in areas such as AR/VR, AI and machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and aerospace. UC Berkeley alumni are routinely hired by Apple, Google, Meta, and Tesla. 

10. Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is home to the nation’s first degree dedicated to immersive reality. In addition to courses such as Virtual Reality for Motion Media and Immersive Revolution: Augmented to Virtual Reality, the STEM-designated Immersive Reality BFA program provides access to panels and presentations by gaming giants such as Ubisoft and EA Sports; AR/VR resources such as immersive reality labs and classrooms and a motion media lab; and Savannah Film Studios—a 10.9-acre facility that includes a next-generation XR stage for virtual productions. Graduates of SCAD’s Immersive Reality BFA program go on to land positions at places such as Epic Games, Microsoft, Google, Blizzard Entertainment, Autodesk, ZeniMax Online Studios, Meta, and Adobe. 

11. University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas

The interdisciplinary Game Design and Development (GDAD) program at University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) provides the opportunity to work alongside industry studios and the game development student organization EGaDS!. GDAD students will also take courses that focus on immersive experiences through the Texas Immersive Institute in UT Austin’s Moody College of Communication. Specific degree options include the Computer Science (CS) BS with an optional Game Development concentration; the cross-disciplinary Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA) in CS; and the Arts and Entertainment Technologies (AET). All options provide heavy AR/VR coursework, access to the Virtual Reality Laboratory, and participation in the Vision, Cognition, and Action Virtual Reality Lab. Across programs, graduates have been hired at places such as Google, HP, Amazon, IBM, EA Games, Apple, GameStop, and Zynga.

12. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan
University of Michigan

University of Michigan (U-M) provides a number of programs, labs, and initiatives that explore AR/VR. Programs include the Computer Science BS; Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) MS; CSE PhD; and the graduate certificate in Extended Reality (XR). Labs and initiatives include the XR Initiative - Center for Academic Innovation and the James and Anne Duderstadt Center (DC). Within the center are the DC Visualization Studio; M.I.D.E.N (Michigan Immersive Digital Experience Nexus); the Fabrication Studio; and VizHubs. Graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in AR/VR. Top employers of U-M alumni include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, General Motors (GM), Epic Games, IBM, and Meta. 

13. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is home to VR@Illinois Lab. This collaborative initiative supports all AR/VR and extended reality activities at UIUC. Resources include virtual reality classrooms; studio spaces for VR creation, research, teaching, and exploration; the VR Club; and the Innovation Studio. Formal program options are housed in Grainger College of Engineering and include the Computer Science BS and MS. Course examples across programs include Virtual Reality; AI for Computer Games; Software Design Lab; Applied Machine Learning; Human-Computer Interaction (HCI); User Interface Design; Software Engineering I-II; and Mobile Interactive Design. UIUC Grainger alumni have gone on to co-found companies such as Yelp, PayPal, and YouTube. Graduates have also been hired at places such as Amazon, Epic Systems, Google, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, IBM, Meta, Tesla, Apple, and Samsung.

14. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) houses the Graphics, Imaging, and Robotics Lab; Graphics and Virtual Reality Group; VisuaLab; and the student organization—Carolina AR/VR (CARVR). Each supports education and research in AR/VR. Formal degree options include the Computer Science BS, MS, and PhD. Potential focus areas include Computer Graphics; Human-Computer Interaction (HCI); Virtual Environments; Animation and Simulation; and Visualization. Graduates are prepared to pursue roles in areas such as AR/VR, game design, software development, AI, and HCI. UNC-Chapel Hill alumni have been hired at places such as Microsoft, Cisco, Google, Amazon, and IBM. 

15. University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida

University of Central Florida (UCF) houses several labs and programs that focus on collaboration, AR/VR systems and applications creation, and AR/VR research. Labs include the Synthetic Reality Lab (SREAL), and the Interactive Systems and User Experience Lab. Program options include the Computer Science (CS) BS; an accelerated BS/MS in CS; MS and PhD degrees in Modeling and Simulation; and the Mixed Reality Engineering graduate certificate. A 10-week XR Development with Unity course is also available. Graduates are prepared to pursue careers across the technology sector. UCF technology alumni are routinely hired by NASA, Oracle, Google, Lockheed Martin, Amazon, Siemens, IBM, Apple, and Intel. 

16. Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas
Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University (TAMU) is the new home of the Virtual Production Institute. This facility supports large-scale mixed-reality environments and education focused on AR/VR, AI, simulation, and sensing technology. Other labs that support AR/VR include HCI@VIZ; the recently launched Texas A&M University Virtual and Augmented Reality (TAMUVR); INDIE Lab; Soft Interaction Lab; MAESTRO Lab; the TEILab; and McNamara Lab. Program options include BS, MS, and MFA degrees in Visualization; a BS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering; the Computer Science BA; and a Virtual Production (VP) minor (with a professional internship). Top employers of TAMU graduates include Lockheed Martin, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Samsung, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Pixar, Amazon, Oracle, DreamWorks, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Electronic Arts (EA), Reel FX, and Texas Instruments (TI).

17. Arizona State University, Mesa, Arizona
Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) is home to Meteor Studio. Funded by tech giants such as Google and Samsung, the studio was created to help advance development and research in AR/VR/XR. ASU also houses the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center and the Center for Narrative and Emerging Media (NEM). Program options for AR/VR students include the NEM MA; the Media Arts and Sciences (Extended Reality Technologies) MS; and the Master of Science in Design (MSD). Programs include a mandatory internship and culminating applied project. Across ASU programs, graduates have been hired at places such as Microsoft, Northrop Grumman, Intel, Amazon, IBM, Honeywell, Apple, and Gore. 

18. Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
Purdue University

Purdue University is home to Purdue Polytechnic Institute, which houses the Department of Computer Graphics Technology (CGT) and the CGT MS with a concentration in Virtual Reality and Visualization. All CGT MS students have access to the IDEAS Research Group, which focuses on Metaverse/AR/VR, and the Purdue HRD Virtual Lab. Graduates are prepared to pursue careers in all industries that utilize AR/VR. Purdue Polytechnic Institute alumni have been hired at places such as Boeing, Mercedes-Benz, Lockheed Martin, DreamWorks, Amazon, RTX, Google, Eli Lilly, Toyota, and Gulfstream Aerospace. 

19. Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Drexel University

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University houses several labs and programs for students interested in studying AR/VR. These include the Immersive Research Lab (IRL); Animation Capture & Effects Lab (ACE-Lab); Digital Media and Virtual Production BS (formerly the Virtual Reality and Immersive Media (VRIM) program and one of the first accredited programs of its kind; and the VR and Immersive Media minor. Across options, students will participate in the Drexel University Co-op Program, which provides opportunities to work for companies such as YouTube VR and Franklin Institute Science Museum. Graduates have landed positions at places such as DreamWorks, Moving Picture Company, Pixar, Disney, and Digital Domain.

University of Arizona (UArizona) houses a STEM-designated BA in Information Science and Arts (BA IS&A) and Information Science BS (BSIS); BS degrees in Game Design and Development BS (BSGDD), and Computer Science; and an undergraduate Games and Simulation certificate (UGCert). Students in all programs may specialize in AR/VR through electives and research opportunities. Program options include the Computer Science BS, MS, and PhD; Design Technology MS (MS DT); Master of Engineering in Computer Science (MEng CS); and the Connective Media MS (MS CM). Across programs, students have access to courses such as Virtual and Augmented Reality; Topics in Mixed Reality; Developing and Designing Interactive Devices; Mobile Human-Robot Interaction Design; and Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI). Labs include the XR Collaboratory (XRC) and Virtual Embodiment Lab (VEL). In 2017, University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) launched its Virtual Reality Lab—the first of its kind at an American University. Shortly after, the school hosted its very first Virtual Reality/ Augmented Reality Hackathon. Sponsors included Sony, Oculus, HTC, and Google. Today, UC San Diego’s VR resources have expanded to include the Extended Reality (XR) Lab and the Design Lab; the Human-Centered Design minor and graduate specialization; and a Virtual Reality App Development certificate that can be added to any degree program. Formal degree programs include the BS, MS, BS/MS, and PhD in Computer Science (CS). Across programs, required electives allow students to customize a focus in AR/VR. UC San Diego CS graduates have been hired at places such as Amazon, Lockheed Martin, NVIDIA, Intuit, Apple, RTX, Northrup Grumman, Tencent, HP, Qualcomm, Lenovo, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. 

23. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI or Rensselaer) provides a number of paths to study AR/VR. Options include BS degrees in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (GSAS), Electronic Arts (EA), and Information Technology and Web Science (ITWS); BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science (CS); a dual CS BS/MS; and an accelerated CS BS/PhD. All programs feature access to AR/VR coursework and activities supported by the Rensselaer Augmented and Virtual Environment (RAVE) Lab. ITWS students can select from more than 20 options to design a focus area or specialize in a formal area such as Machine Learning; GSAS; or Computer and Systems Engineering. Graduates typically land positions within six months of graduating at places such as Boeing, Epic Systems, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, IBM, and Amazon Robotics.

Duke University (Duke) is home to the Institute for Virtual and Augmented Reality for the Digital Humanities (VARDHI)—the first institute dedicated to AR/VR research conducted by humanities scholars. Other labs include Duke Immersive Virtual Environment (DiVE); Co-Lab Studio at the Technology Engagement Center (TEC); and Dig@Lab. Degree paths include the Computer Science BA, BS, MS, and PhD. Graduates of the Computer Science programs at Duke University are prepared to pursue careers in all industries that utilize AR/VR. They have been hired by companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, Apple, and IBM. 

25. Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois

Northwestern University (Northwestern) houses a number of labs and programs that focus on AR/VR education, projects, and research. Two of the largest labs include The Garage, and the Center for Human-Computer Interaction + Design. Others labs and initiatives include the Tangible Interaction Design and Learning (TIDAL) Lab; Artificial Intelligence Group; Computer Science + X (CS +X) Initiative; Interactive Audio Lab; NuLogiCS Group; Interactive Audio Lab; Swarm Robotics Lab; Cognition, Creativity, and Communication Lab (C3 Lab); IDEAS Lab; and Prescience Lab. Programs include the Computer Science BS/BA, MS, and PhD. Undergraduates may select a concentration such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Robotics, or Artificial Intelligence (AI). Graduates go on to become Computer Programmers, Software Developers, and Engineers at places such as Google, Microsoft, Intel, and IBM.

The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University (Ohio State) houses a Design MFA program and several labs that allow students to focus in AR/VR. Labs include the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and the Emerging Tech Studio (ETS). The interdisciplinary Design MFA has a Digital Animation and Interactive Media (DAIM) track with the option to select 12 studio elective credits in any area. Course examples include Virtual Modeling; Designing Immersive Virtual Environments; and Computer Vision for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The program culminates with the Project Exhibition and Oral Defense (Thesis Defense). Graduates are prepared to pursue careers with technology firms, game design studios, film production houses, design and media companies, and advertising agencies, among others.
