The School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) and Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California (USC) provide more than a dozen paths to study game design. Known as USC Games, this collaboration includes BFA degrees in Game Development and Interactive Design, Game Art, and Themed Entertainment; the Computer Science (Games) BS, and Computer Science (Game Development) MS; the Interactive Media (Games and Health) MFA; the Cinematic Arts (Media Arts, Games, and Health) MA; and the Game Design and Development MS. 

Minors include Game Design; Game Studies; Game Audio; Game User Research; Themed Entertainment; Game Entrepreneurism; Computer Science; Technical Game Art; Video Game Production; and Video Game Programming. Many minors can also be taken as specializations. 

Across programs, students benefit from integrated curriculums; access to state-of-the-art game development labs and other production facilities; professional internships; and possible participation in the USC Games Expo. 

Programs culminate with a final project, thesis, or capstone. USC Games graduates are often recruited by places such as Electronic Arts (EA), Xbox Game Studios, DreamWorks, Activision Blizzard, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Ubisoft, Epic Games, Disney, NVIDIA, Riot Games, Google, Unity, Rockstar Games, Apple, Warner Bros. New York University

New York University’s (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts (NYU Tisch) houses NYU Game Center, which consists of the Game Design BFA, MFA, and minor programs. Single courses are available for students enrolled in most majors. Course examples include 3D Game Studio-Unity; Game Design I-II; Game Development-Team Studio; and Code Lab. 

All degree-seeking students have the opportunity to participate in workshops, tournaments, and playtests; professional game conferences such as PRACTICE—Game Design in Detail; The Game Center Incubator; and study abroad experiences at any one of NYU’s 14 global academic centers in Abu Dhabi, Ghana, Buenos Aires, Shanghai, Madrid, London, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney, Washington D.C., Prague, Berlin, and Florence. Students also have opportunities to intern at places such as Disney, Riot Games, and Blizzard Entertainment. 

The Game Design BFA culminates with a capstone project. The MFA culminates with a thesis. Capstone and thesis projects can be completed individually or with a group. MFA projects will be presented at the NYU Game Center Spring Show. Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is home to the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology Network (IDeATe), which houses a 45-unit Game Design minor (GDM) that complements a number of undergraduate programs. Although the minor is open to students from any major, popular combinations include the Electronic and Time Based Media (ETB) BFA/GDM; Art BFA/GDM; Computer Science (CS) BS/Computer Graphics concentration/GDM; Bachelor of CS and Arts (BCSA)/GDM; and Music and Technology BS/GDM. 

At the graduate level, the IDeATe houses a Master of Entertainment Technology (MET) that highlights an Immersion Semester, which features courses such as Building Virtual Worlds and Visual Story. At the end of this 14-week experience, students will have a completed marketable product or prototype. In addition, the CMU MET culminates with a final project with sponsors such as Electronic Arts (EA), NASA, MTV, Disney, Google, NVIDIA, and Microsoft.

Features across all programs include dedicated fabrication and physical computing labs; access to a soft technologies studio; workshops; collaborative classrooms with access to a black box studio; internship opportunities; and study abroad experiences in places such as Nantes, France. The CMU IDeATe Game Design minor culminates with the production of an industry-ready video game.

4. University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah (Top 3% of schools considered)
University of Utah

The College of Architecture and Planning at University of Utah (The U) is home to the Utah Division of Games. Within the division are several paths to study game design including a Games BS (BSG); the Computer Science BS (CS BS) with an emphasis in Entertainment Arts and Engineering (CSEAE); a Master of EAE (MEAE); the dual MBA/MEAE; and a Games minor. These immersive, interdisciplinary programs provide opportunities to complete a professional internship at places such as Epic Games and Warner Bros. Games.

Students also have opportunities to join campus clubs such as Crimson Gaming, the 3D Art Club, or Gamecraft. Across clubs, students participate in workshops, attend industry events, and develop games for game jams. Other program benefits include courses taught by instructors with experience in all areas of game development; access to state-of-the-art production facilities; studio simulation project courses; and the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams to publish a game.

5. University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida (Top 4% of schools considered)
University of Central Florida

University of Central Florida (UCF) is home to Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) and Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA). Both academic units provide several paths to study games. NSCM programs include the Digital Media BA, culminating with a Game Capstone; the Digital Media MA, culminating with a thesis or research project; and a Digital Media minor. The BA has tracks in Game Design, and Web and Interactive Media. FIEA houses the Interactive Entertainment MS with specializations in Art, Production, or Programming. All MS specializations culminate with the Interactive Entertainment Capstone and Digital Portfolio. 

Activities for all programs take place in the Communication and Media Building, which houses state-of-the-art studio and classroom space across 112,000 square feet of space. This includes one of the largest soundstages and motion capture studios on the east coast—Studio 500. Other program highlights include internships at major studios; study abroad opportunities; participation in Esports at UCF; and student clubs such as Game Development Knights, Women’s Gaming Alliance, and Gaming Knights.

Students also have the opportunity to complete the Game Design (GD) or Digital Venture (DV) Practicum. The GD Practicum is an internship (full-time job). The DV Practicum gives students the opportunity to build a start-up.

6. Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York (Top 4% of schools considered)
Rochester Institute of Technology

In 2016, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) became the world’s first university to publish a video game on the Xbox One gaming platform. The school is also home to Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS), which houses the School of Interactive Games and Media (IGM). Degree paths include the BS and MS in Game Design and Development (GDD); an accelerated BS/MS; and minors in Game Design and Game Development. RIT’s College of Art and Design’s School of Design also has a STEM-designated 3D Digital Design BFA with specializations in Game Arts and 3D Visualization.

All students may participate in Creative Industry Day. This networking event welcomes reps from places such as Epic Games, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery. Students also have the opportunity to complete up to two paid blocks of cooperative education experiences with places such as Epic Games, Cartoon Network, Electronic Arts (EA), Microsoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), and Google. 

Other program highlights include lectures, workshops, seminars, and demonstrations by industry professionals; access to state-of-the-art production facilities and the Digital Games Hub; independent study; and the opportunity to develop and commercialize student games at RIT’s MAGIC Spell Studios.

Undergraduate programs culminate with a final project and capstone show. Students in the GDD MS program will complete a capstone project including the 700-level Capstone Design and Capstone Development courses.

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) houses more art and design degrees and specializations than just about any other school of its kind. Programs for students interested in studying games include the Interactive Design and Game Development (IDGD) BA, BFA, MA, and MFA. Minors include Game UX, Game Development, and Concept Art for Games. All students benefit from internship opportunities; individual and group projects; access to SCAD Film Studios; and state-of-the-art production facilities in the 60,000 square feet SCAD Digital Media Center (DMC) and Mongomery Hall.

8. University of California, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California (Top 6% of schools considered)
University of California, Santa Cruz

University of California, Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz) is the first institution in the UC system to launch an undergraduate game major. Today, the school provides multiple paths to study games. Housed in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) and known as Games @ UC Santa Cruz, options include the Computer Science BS (CS BS) (Computer Game Design); the Art and Design-Games and Playable Media BA (BA AGPM); the Computational Media MS with a Games and Playable Media project sequence; a Digital Arts and New Media (DANM) MFA; and PhDs in Computational Media (CM), and Computer Science and Engineering. Programs are available at the main Santa Cruz campus and the school’s Silicon Valley (SVC) location.

Across all programs students have access to state-of-the-art production facilities and centers such as the Advanced Visualization and Interactive Systems Lab; Critical Realities Studio; The Other Lab; Expressive Intelligence Studio; Augmented Design Laboratory (ADL); Ludo Lab; the Center for Computational Experience; and the Critical Realities Studio. 

Other Games @ UC Santa Cruz highlights include guest speakers from the game design industry; networking events; game design internships; participation in the Annual Games Showcase; frequent studio tours; and project evaluations by industry professionals.

DigiPen

DigiPen launched the world’s first bachelor’s degree in Video Game Development. Today, this Houdini Certified school has multiple paths to study game design. Options include the Computer Science (CS) and Game Design BS; a BS in CS in Real-Time Interactive Simulation; the Game Design BA; a Computer Science MS; the accelerated five-year Computer Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation BS/CS MS program; and a Digital Arts MFA with a customized specialization. Across programs, students have opportunities to work in multidisciplinary teams to develop several original video games, create software, complete a final project, and finalize a market-ready portfolio. All activities take place in a real studio environment. 

To date, DigiPen graduates have been credited on more than 2,000 commercial video games. Program alumni can be found at 1,500+ companies across the U.S. and abroad. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is home to MIT Game Lab. This research and development hub supports several formal interdisciplinary programs for students interested in studying game design. The lab also helps students create their own path of study, along with opportunities to collaborate, build games, and work with MIT partners such as Meta, the Singapore Government, ElevatePro, and MassDigi.

Program options for game designers include BS and MS degrees in Comparative Media Studies (CMS) with a strong focus in games; BS and MS degrees in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE); the Brain and Cognitive Science BS; and the Business BS with a customized focus area developed in collaboration with the MIT Game Lab. Because all programs are interdisciplinary, students will explore areas such as game design, virtual worlds, and interactive writing. 

Course examples include Creating Videogames; Critical Worldbuilding; Game Studies; Interactive Narrative; Game Design Methods; Virtual Reality and Immersive Media Production; Design and Development of Games for Learning; Transmedia Storytelling - Modern Sci-Fi; Games and Culture; Imagination, Computation, and Expression Studio; Designing Interaction; and Digital Media in Japan and Korea. The culminating experience for undergraduates is a capstone project and presentation. Graduates will complete a master’s thesis.

Full Sail University

The game design programs at Full Sail University (Full Sail) follow an immersive, project-based model with accelerated, year-round schedules. Programs include a Game Development AAS; BS degrees in Game Art, Game Business and Esports, Simulation Engineering, and Game Development; an Interactive Technology BS completion program with a Game Design concentration; a Game Business and Esports certificate; and the Game Design MS.

Program features include opportunities to gain production experience in a real-world studio environment; internships at local studios; access to the state-of-the art Full Sail/Echelon Fit Fitness Technology Lab, the Full Sail/Wargaming.net UX Lab, and the nation’s largest collegiate esports arena; and the option to complete programs on campus or online.

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) houses a Computational Media BS (BSCM) program that launched in 2004 with just one student. With more than 300 students today, the BSCM is one of Georgia Tech’s fastest growing programs. The focus of the program is Media and Games. Other program options for students interested in studying games include MS and PhD degrees in Digital Media; a dual BSCM/Digital Media MS; a CM minor; and an undergraduate certificate in Scenarios, Models, and Military Games.

Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University houses several programs for game designers. Options include BS degrees in Game Design, Computer Science + Animation (CS+ANI) with a Game Art Technical Director concentration, and Game Programming; a STEM-designated Animation BFA with a concentration in Game Art + the option to focus in Animation or Modeling and Rigging; the Game Design MFA; and a Game Programming MS. The Departments of Design Media Arts (DMA) and Computer Science (CS) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) provide two paths to study game design—the DMA BA and CS BS. The DMA BA is a multidisciplinary studio-based program that enrolls approximately 22 students per course. Examples include Game Design; Worldbuilding; Game Engine; 3D Modeling and Motion; Collaborative Game Lab; and Interactive Animation. 

The CS BS has a Graphics and Vision area that explores rendering, motion capture, artificial life modeling, and animation for the games and film industries. Course examples include Digital Design Project Laboratory; Software Engineering; Programming Languages; and Computer Systems Architecture. Students in both programs can take additional courses to fulfill elective requirements or enhance the degrees. 

In addition, UCLA extension provides a number of single courses that are open to all majors. Examples include Intro to Game Development with Godot 4; Developing Video Game Narratives; Composing Music for Video Games; Unity I: 3D Game Design and Game Engines; Immersive Experience Design; Drawing from Videogame Styles; and Blender Foundations for Spatial Media. 

All DMA BA and CS BS students may participate in the UCLA Game Lab. Supported by the School of the Arts and Architecture (UCLA Arts), and the School of Theater, Film and Television, the UCLA Game Lab hosts workshops, guest speaker events, and visiting artists.
