The animation programs at Gobelins Paris (Gobelins) boast a 100% employment rate within six months of graduating. Program options include a 3D Character Animator certificate; the Bachelor or Master in Character Animation and Animated Filmmaking; the 3D Character Animation Bachelor; and the Master in Visual Storytelling. Programs are provided in partnership with CITIA (la Cité de l’Image en mouvement d’Annecy).

Considered the Harvard of Animation, Sheridan College (Sheridan) houses the Sheridan Center for Animation and Emerging Technologies (SCAET). A proud partner of SideFX, Sheridan also houses a Bachelor of Animation program and graduate certificates in Computer Animation or Digital Creature Animation-Technical Direction. Across programs, students have the opportunity to produce industry-ready animated films in the SCAET.

3. The Animation Workshop - VIA University College, Viborg, Denmark
The Animation Workshop - VIA University College

VIA University College (VIA) houses The Animation Workshop (TAW)—home to the largest animation festival in Denmark. Launched in 1988, TAW provides short programs in everything from Unreal Engine (one week) to 3D Character Animation (10 weeks). Formal training options include BA degrees in Character Animation; Computer Graphic Arts (CGA); and Graphic Storytelling. All TAW students will gain valuable experience working at a production studio such as Aardman or Illumination.

Bournemouth University

Bournemouth University (BU) is home to the Faculty of Media and Communication, which houses one of the few research-intensive Animation centers in the UK—the National Center for Computer Animation (NCCA). BU is also one of the few Houdini Certified School’s in the UK. Program options include a BA in Computer Animation and Visual Effects; a 3D Computer Animation MA; an MSc in Computer Animation and Visual Effects; and a Digital Effects MA. Graduates go on to work with major studios such as DreamWorks, Pixar, and EA Games.

The School of Communication at Royal College of Art (RCA) houses MA programs in Animation and Digital Direction. Both options explore animation, games, film, artificial intelligence (AI), media, STEM disciplines, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), theater, and literature. Graduates of the programs have landed positions at independent and major studios such as DreamWorks, Aardman, and Passion Pictures.

6. RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia

The College of Design and Social Context (DSC) at RMIT University (RMIT) houses the School of Design, home to the Animation and Interactive Media BDes; the Master of Animation, Games, and Interactivity (MAGI); and the AGI graduate certificate. RMIT is also home to the College of Vocational Education (VE), which houses the Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation, Gaming and Visual Effects) program. Graduates of the animation programs at RMIT are prepared to pursue roles in all areas of animation, games, and interactive media. MAGI graduates are also prepared to launch their own studios or freelance businesses. 

7. Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Emily Carr University of Art and Design

Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) is home to the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media. Within the faculty is a Bachelor of Media Arts (BMA) program with two options including 2D + Experimental Animation, and 3D Computer Animation. ECU is the only school in British Columbia to house a bachelor’s degree in both 3D and CG Animation. BMA graduates have gone on to secure positions at major studios such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Pixar, and DreamWorks.

RUBIKA provides 2D and 3D Animation programs leading to a BAC+5 (master’s degree). All students have the opportunity to complete several work experiences through partnerships with more than 300 studios such as Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Gameloft, and DreamWorks. Program alumni enjoy a 90% employment rate within a year of graduating. Some of the top hiring companies for RUBIKA animation graduates include Disney Animation, ILM, DreamWorks, Pixar, Illumination, Aardman, and Framestore.

Griffith Film School (GFS) at Griffith University is the largest school of its kind in Australia. The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) houses a Media Art BFA program with a specialization in Animation. Students may add a minor such as Film or Art History. Graduate options include the ADM MA or PhD. Possible research areas include Audio and Media Art (Animation/Film/Interactive) and Visual Art and Digital Humanities. Across programs, graduates are prepared to pursue advanced roles in animation, games, and film, among others.

ARTFX is a Toon Boom Center of Excellence that houses MA programs in 2D Film Animation and 3D Character Animation. Students have opportunities to work with ARTFX partners such as MPC, Illumination, DNEG, Cinesite, and Mikros Animation. Graduates enjoy a 95% job placement rate within six months to a year of graduating. Program alumni have worked on productions such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ready Player One, and The Lion King

Beijing Film Academy (BFA) launched The Animation School (TAS) in 2000. China’s first college-level animation academy, TAS serves nearly 360 students enrolled in BA, MFA, and PhD programs in Computer Animation; Comics; Art of Animation; Game Design; Film; and Art Design. TAS graduates have worked on productions that have won awards at Cannes Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, and Berlin International Film Festival.

The School of Design at Université Laval provides two paths to study animation: the Bachelor of Animation (B. Anim.) and the Art and Science of Animation certificate (CASA). Both programs highlight project-based curriculums with opportunities to work on team projects and participate in the Université Laval Placement Service (SPLA) event, which attracts employers from the animation industry. Graduates go on to pursue advanced roles in film and animation, game design, and visual effects, among others.

Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD U) houses the Faculty of Art, home to the Experimental Animation BFA program. This option prepares students to pursue careers in animation, film production, gaming, and television production. Other OCAD U animation programs include the Expanded Animation minor and an Animation Skills certificate. Across all programs, graduates enjoy a 90% employment rate. 

16. Media Design School, Auckland, New Zealand

Media Design School (MDS) is New Zealand’s only Unity Authorized Training and Certification partner. Also, a Houdini Certified School, MDS houses the country’s first 3D Animation program. Accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), the program leads to a Bachelor of Art and Design in 3D Animation and VFX. Graduates have landed positions at DreamWorks, Lucasfilm, Disney, Warner Bros., Microsoft, and Weta FX.

Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is one of the seven schools at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU). The oldest College of Art and Design in Central Switzerland, the school provides two paths to study animation: the Film BA with a specialization in Animation and an Animation MA. Students in the BA program may focus in 2D or 3D Animation. All animation programs culminate with a film sequence or short film. Tokyo Animation College provides two-year Animator and CG Animation programs, as well as three-year Animation and CG options. Programs culminate with a full-length, industry-ready animated production. Graduates have gone on to work on productions such as the manga series Witch Watch and the anime series Lycoris Recoil.

MoPA graduates are prepared to pursue careers in all areas of animation, film, and television production.

Escape Studios London

Escape Studios London (Escape Studios) was the first Unreal Authorized Training Center in the UK. Also a Houdini Certified School, Escape Studios provides a BA/MArt in The Art of Computer Animation (2D or 3D); the BSc MSci in Character Creation for Animation, Games and VFX; a 3D Animation MA; and an MA in Character and Creature Creation. University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is an ARRI Certified Film School. Also accredited by the British Film Institute (BFI), the school provides Animation and Games Animation BA programs. These studio-based programs culminate with a final capstone or publishable game. The Faculty of Communication Design at National Institute of Design (NID) provides two paths to study animation: the BDes and MDes in Animation Film Design. With less than 20 available seats per program, the BDes and MDes curriculums cover traditional animation, digital animation, and short film production. Graduates have been hired at paces such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, MTV, and Cognizant.

Ecole Emile Cohl (EEC) has a Concept Artist program with two specializations including Animated Cinema and Animation Director. Students in both areas will complete a mandatory six-month internship and master industry-standard Animation tools such as Adobe After Effects, Toon Boom Harmony, and TVPaint Animation. The Concept Artist program at EEC takes two years to complete, full-time. Graduates will earn the RNCP Level 7 Title: Artistic Director – Director in Animated Cinema.

Established in 1906, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Bezalel) is the oldest art and design institution in Israel. Within the school’s Department of Screen-Based Arts is a Screen-Based Arts BFA that explores 2D and 3D animation, stop-motion, experimental filmmaking, and video art. The program culminates with the production of an industry-ready animated film. Graduates have gone on to work at animation, film, game, and television studios where they have produced dozens of award-winning films.

The School of Creative Media (SCM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) houses a Creative Media (CM) program with options leading to a BA, BSc, MA, MFA PhD, or minor in Creative Media. A New Media BAS and joint degrees with Leuphana University (LU) are also available. Joint options include the CityU BACM or BAS + LU Digital Media BA). All programs highlight animation, games, new media, and cinema coursework. The School of Animation at ChungKang College of Cultural Industries (ChungKang) houses the largest animation production studio in Korea. ISART Digital

ISART Digital (ISART) houses a Cinema Animation 3D/VFX program that leads to a master’s degree. Provided at the school’s Paris, France and Montreal, Canada campuses, the program takes place in a professional production studio environment, with opportunities spend one month to a year in Japan at partner universities such as Tokyo University of Technology (TUT) and Niigata Computer College. With a 90% employment rate, graduates have been hired at places such as Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Sony Pictures Imageworks, and DNEG.

BRASSART

BRASSART is home to a five-year 3D Animation and Immersion program leading to certification at year four and a diploma at the end of year five. Provided at most of the school’s 15 campuses, the program culminates with a professional portfolio or demo reel of the student’s best work. BRASSART alumni can be found at places such as Disney Animation Studios, MPC, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Ubisoft, and Mikros Animation.

The Faculty of the Arts at Kyoto University of the Arts (KUAD) provides several paths to study animation. These include the Character Design BA in the faculty’s Department of Character Design; the Illustration BA in the Department of Information Design; and the Film Production BA in the Department of Film Production. Graduates are prepared to pursue careers in animation, film and television, game design, fine art, and advertising, among others.
