The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at University of Delaware (UD) is home to the Department of Art and Design and the Visual Communications BFA (BFA-VC) program. Designed for students seeking careers in fields such as graphic design, illustration, advertising, and motion graphics, the BFA-VC program features field trips; immersive studio experiences; internships at local and regional companies; visiting artists and designers; and opportunities to engage in community service.
In 1923, UD founded the first study abroad program by a American institution. Today, BFA-VC students, and others across UD have access to more than 100 study abroad programs across 40+ countries. Students can choose from short programs in winter and summer or semester-long experiences in fall and spring. Just a few places students can travel to include Japan, Greece, France, Spain, Italy, England, Austria, Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium, and Singapore.
The BFA-VC at University of Delaware is a 124 credit hour program that begins with two years in core art and design courses. This includes courses such as Core Drawing; Core Media/Design/Culture; Core Painting; Core Design; Core Photography; Core Printmaking; Core Moving Images; Core Typography; and Core Interactive Media. Upon acceptance into the BFA-VC program, students will begin taking upper level Visual Communications courses.
Examples include Typography Methods; Design Methods; Design Contexts; Interaction Design; Experimental Typography; Design Studio; and Portfolio Preparation. To enhance the degree and develop skills in other areas of art and design, students have the opportunity to select nine credits of electives. Examples include Art and Design for Games; Book Arts; Advertising Design Methods; Letterpress Printing; Illustration Studio; Experimental Animation; Photographic Strategies; and Illustration Narrative.
The Visual Communications BFA program at University of Delaware culminates with the BFA Project and Exhibition. Graduates are prepared to pursue design roles across industries. Possible job titles Graphic Designer, UI/UX Designer, Packaging Designer, Illustrator, Communications Manager, Advertising Designer, Video Editor, Brand Manager, Exhibit Designer, Book Designer, Creative Director, and Web Designer.
