The Illustration BFA Program at Maine College of Art and Design (MECA&D or Maine College of Art) features small class sizes with courses taught by professional illustrators and artists, internship opportunities with a variety of Portland studios, and access to shared workspaces and equipment.

Course examples for the program include Editorial Illustration, Motion Graphics and Animation, Digital Mixed Media for Illustrator, The Picture Book, Portrait Drawing in Illustration: People and Animals, Illustration Majors Studio, Narrative/Sequential Illustration, Selling the Scene, Advanced Techniques Masterclass, Illustration in Context, Intro to Ink for Illustrators, and Methods and Media in Illustration.

In the final year of the program, Maine College of Art Illustration BFA students will complete 3YR Seminar: Motive, Method, Making (GD & IL), Professional Studio, and Senior Synthesis. Graduates of the program are independent contractors, self-employed professional artists, and salaried artists holding positions such as Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and Art Director.

Maine College of Art & Design is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Founded in 1882 as part of the Portland Society of Art, Maine College of Art & Design serves nearly 600 degree-seeking students and 1,500 continuing students enrolled in 11 studio majors leading to a BFA, a low-residency MFA in Studio Art, and a 10-month MAT Program.
