Scope of Program:
Studio Art students at University of Massachusetts Amherst begin their studies with a foundation year, which includes coursework in drawing, art history, art studio and 2D and 3D design. Students must apply for acceptance into a specific Studio Art discipline/concentration; a portfolio review is part of this process. Each student works with advisors to create a plan of study. Typically, Animation students focus on animation fundamentals, visual culture, digital media and computer animation. Digital Media students concentrate on drawing, still imagery, photography, printmaking, time-based digital media and computing in the fine arts. All students complete a thesis project.
A portfolio is required as part of the application process. Need-based and merit scholarships are available, and the University of Massachusetts also offers system-wide scholarships. Massachusetts residents are strongly encouraged to apply for state grants and scholarships.
