Scope of Program:
The University of Notre Dame, Indiana's best-known Catholic university, offers both a B. A. and B. F. A. program in Graphic Design. B. F. A. students must complete additional studio courses and maintain a grade point average of 3.25. Students begin their studies with foundation coursework in drawing, visual communications, typography, photography and professional practices. B. F. A. students focus on studio work, including motion graphics, website design, and production design. All B. F. A. students must take B. F. A. seminar courses and pass a review each semester. Seniors complete a thesis and create an exhibition. B. A. candidates concentrate on applied multimedia technology, website design, art history and digital 3D design.
M. F. A. candidates in Graphic Design must write a thesis and complete a Design graduate seminar. Coursework in art history and graphic design round out the program, which places emphasis on independent studio work.
Graphic Design students are strongly encouraged to purchase a MacBook Pro laptop computer. Scholarships are available. Graduate students may apply for tuition waiver grants, teaching assistantships and scholarships. A portfolio must be submitted with the M. F. A. application.
