Scope of Program:
Visual Communication students at OU must complete the Foundation program, which includes courses in 2D and 3D design, drawing and contemporary art theory. All students must pass a portfolio review after completing the Foundation program in order to continue in the major. Visual Communication students focus on nonverbal communication, information systems, design problem solving, design technology, digital design and typography. All students complete a senior capstone project.
M. F. A. candidates may choose the Time Based Media or Visual Communication emphasis. Students participate in graduate seminars and complete coursework in art history, studio electives and visual communication or time based media studio. All students must pass a midway review at the end of their second semester of coursework in order to continue with the program. All students create a thesis and graduate exhibition.
A portfolio or interview is required with the application to the B. F. A. program. M. F. A. applicants must submit a portfolio. All Visual Communication students at OU must purchase an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop computer. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. The University of Oklahoma actively recruits National Merit Scholars.
