Scope of Program:
Graphic Design students at The University of South Dakota complete a first year art seminar and take foundation courses in drawing, color, 2D and 3D design and art history. They continue with coursework in studio arts, figure drawing, graphic design history, mixed media, typography, illustration, multimedia processes, photography and book design. All students complete a degree project.
M. F. A. candidates in Graphic Design must pass annual reviews to remain in the program. Students focus on art history, design methods, art theory, print studio, package design, graphic design special problems and typography. All students participate in graduate seminars and create a folio and thesis exhibition. Students must pass oral examinations and a written art exit examination.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. Minnesota residents are eligible for tuition reciprocity. Merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Residents of South Dakota are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants and scholarships.
