Scope of Program:
Art and Technology students in Youngstown State University’s B. F. A. program must complete core coursework in drawing, painting, photography, 2D design and 3D design and pass a foundations portfolio review in order to be admitted to the major. Students then focus on digital imaging, digital compositing, digital video production, web as art, digital audio/video production, studio problems, graphic design and typography. All students must pass a junior portfolio review and complete a senior project.
Graphic and Interactive Design students must also complete core courses in 2D design, 3D design and drawing and pass a portfolio review in order to be admitted to the major. They then concentrate on typography, graphic design history, digital photography, interface design, 3D graphics, multimedia design, publication design and pre-press production. Students must pass a junior portfolio review, complete a senior seminar and create a senior project.
Need-based and merit scholarships are available. Students should expect to pay lab fees for all Art Department courses. Ohio residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants and scholarships. Students in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Crawford, Erie, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland Counties in Pennsylvania are eligible for reduced tuition rates, as are students in Youngstown’s “regional service” area, which consists of Chautauqua County, New York, Armstrong, Clarion, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson and Warren Counties in Pennsylvania and Brook, Hancock, Marshall and Ohio Counties in West Virginia.
