Virginia State University

Virginia State University is one of the only HBCU-designated universities (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) offering an animation program. That’s a big deal for many reasons, not least of which is because animation relies on the backgrounds, experiences and creative voices of a diverse group of artists. The vision for developing the Animation BFA at VSU was thanks to numerous individuals, including a band of dedicated students (many of whom graduate this year) and one man who wouldn’t let them down.

Laguna College of Art & Design

A mere five years old, the Game Art program at Laguna College of Art & Design may be young but it’s already established deep industry roots that feed its students and cultivate its approach. Required coursework in foundational, multi-disciplinary studies include figure drawing, anatomy, the liberal arts and more. But don’t be fooled into thinking that the program seeks to create generalists. The curriculum is designed instead to develop artists with marketable skills and a solid foundation to move the game industry forward. So far, it’s working with an enviably high graduate job placement rating and recent alumni in every major studio that you can think of.

Columbus College of Art & Design

As one of the nation’s oldest private art colleges, Columbus College of Art & Design’s small classes and tight knit community may harken back to simpler times but there’s nothing simplistic or insignificant about its animation program. Though a relatively young program, the college has long been turning out successful graduates working in animation (many of whom were cultivated in CCAD’s Illustration and Media Studies programs). Today, the Animation department continues to catch the attention of those in the know- bolstering its compelling list of industry partners as well as successful working alumni.

UCA

Though its history as an art school dates back to Victorian times, the UK’s University for the Creative Arts Farnham was more recently purpose-built for artists in mind. Today, it serves alongside the other UCA campuses and boasts a slew of tempting programs including a distinguished animation department. Along with a vibrant creative community and quick commute to London, acclaimed faculty and alumni attract budding artists to its campus in the south of England (its most recent alumnus in the news is Chris Butler, ’95, co-director and screenwriter of the Oscar-nominated animated film ParaNorman).

Seneca College

Seneca College may be Canada’s largest college (with multiple campuses in the greater Toronto area), but more importantly from our perspective is that it’s home to a powerhouse animation department on everyone’s radar. Seneca’s esteemed animation program boasts a rigorous 3 year curriculum with working faculty members who carefully cultivate the next generation of 2D and 3D artists (many of whom can be found working in little known studios such as Pixar, Disney and Blizzard).
