Indiana is perfectly ok with being the underdog, but because it lives in Chicago’s shadow, many artists and graphic designers wonder if the state has what it takes to produce and retain top talent. Based on the number of top-tier colleges with excellent graphic design programs, it’s safe to say that the state has no problems producing prolific graphic designers and helping them find work at local firms. While many work at firms in major Indiana cities such as Indianapolis and Bloomington, others take advantage of the affordable cost of living here and commute to Chicago for work.
Many Indiana schools are on the list of “best” schools for graphic designers. Ranking agencies such as Princeton Review consider factors such as the number of program offerings, faculty resources, graduation and retention rates, financial resources, student selectivity, and peer assessment when determining which schools deserve a spot on the list. Several of the state’s 105+ accredited colleges made the list based on these factors and more. They can be found in major cities such as Indianapolis and Fort Wayne or small towns such as Kokomo and St. Mary of the Woods.
