Scope of Program:
Students at the Fashion Institute of Technology must complete an A. A. S. degree at FIT or elsewhere or apply as a transfer student to FIT's B. F. A. program. Computer Animation and Interactive Media students must also complete prerequisite courses in computer-aided design, 3D modeling, 2D animation and design and authoring for interactive media before applying to the B. F. A. program. Once accepted, students focus on storyboarding, rigging, interface design, 3D modeling and animation, motion graphics and programming concepts. All students create a thesis and demo reel. Graphic Design students concentrate on publication design, typography, broadcast design, graphic design in digital media, 3D presentation design, package design and design process technology. All students create a portfolio. Illustration students complete coursework in Adobe Illustrator, book illustration, visual self-expression, digital painting, 2D computer animation, color rendering, digital layout and documentary illustration. All students complete an illustration project.
M. F. A. candidates focus on illustration history, drawing, creative writing for illustrators, digital and traditional media, narrative art, illustration in film and digital illustration. All students must write a thesis paper and create a visual thesis.
A portfolio is required for application to the B. F. A. and M. F. A. programs. M. F. A. applicants must have a B. F. A. degree and several years of related work experience. Merit and need-based scholarships are available.
