Scope of Program:
Otis College of Art and Design was Southern California's first independent art school. All Otis students begin with the Foundation Year, which combines art, liberal arts and science courses to provide students with a strong grounding in the arts. Foundation Year includes a trip to Paris, France. Graphic Design and Illustration undergraduates take coursework in drawing, painting, typography, practicum and communication studio, then specialize in their respective disciplines. Students complete a senior project. Digital Media students focus on drawing, type and design, 3D modeling and animation, visual effects, media in motion, studio visits and business practices. A senior thesis is required.
Master's degree candidates in Graphic Design concentrate on typography, social responsibility, directed studies, visual language, writing (theory and criticism) and a final project. The M. F. A. program includes summer workshops and mentorships.
All students must submit a portfolio as part of the application process. Scholarships are available for incoming and continuing students. Otis Grants help to offset financial need. Work/study is available.
