Scope of Program:
The School of the Museum of Fine Arts offers an all-elective B. F. A. with no school-defined majors. Students work with mentors to create a personalized course of study and may specialize in one or more areas of their choice. Students may also earn a combined degree with Tufts University in five years (earning both the B. F. A. and the B. A. or B. S. degree) or earn a degree through Northeastern University. Students choosing to specialize in Film and Animation may take courses in animation production, animation techniques and sound, editing, post-production, drawing for animation and collage for animation. Students specializing in Text and Image Arts may focus on illustration, letterforms, graphic design, type as image, fanzine, digital bookworks and sign, symbols and logos.
Master's degree candidates take courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and at Tufts and earn their M. F. A. from Tufts. Students participate in studio work, graduate seminars and art history courses. Students must pass a second-year portfolio review and create a final M. F. A. exhibition.
The School of the Museum of Fine Arts requires all applicants to submit a portfolio. Merit scholarships are available. Massachusetts residents are encouraged to apply for state scholarships and grants.
