Scope of Program:
The University of Hawaiʽi Mānoa offers a wide array of courses in digital media, graphic design and electronic arts. Undergraduates may apply to the Academy for Creative Media after completing 12 credit hours of study. Successful applicants may concentrate in Digital Cinema, Computer Animation or Critical Studies. Computer Animation students focus on 3D visual effects, 3D character animation, narrative game design, 3D scene design, creative media technologies, and computer game production. Digital Cinema students concentrate on visual effects, editing, post-production techniques, directing and digital production and complete a group project. Critical Studies students complete coursework in media ethics, oceanic media and culture, screening Asian Americans, genre and narrative theory and global media. Electronic Arts students take courses in imaging systems and sound, interactive systems, art and technology, digital imaging and a capstone studio class. Graphic Design students focus on typography, computer graphic design, production techniques, studio lab and a thesis project.
M. F. A. candidates in Electronic Arts concentrate on art history, electronic arts studio and graduate art seminars. Students must create a thesis exhibition and accompanying written statement.
All Academy for Creative Media students are required to purchase a laptop computer. Applicants to the Computer Animation concentration must submit a portfolio. M. F. A. applicants must also submit a portfolio. Scholarships are available, including Pacific-Asian scholarships and research and travel awards.
