Scope of Program:
Visual Design undergraduates at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth begin their studies with a Foundation year. Foundation courses include drawing, 2D workshop and design, 3D concepts and workshop, life drawing, visual language, art history and a visual arts colloquium. Digital Media students concentrate on 2D animation, 3D modeling, storyboarding, virtual reality, web design, photography, digital imaging and interface design. Graphic Design students focus on typography, visual culture, digital media, history of design, advanced drawing, design strategies and images and meaning. Illustration students complete coursework in media techniques, visual culture, figure drawing, painting, color media, illustration concepts, drawing and composition and illustration style. All students must pass a sophomore year portfolio review and either complete a senior project or create a senior exhibition.
Master's degree candidates participate in graduate seminars and critiques and art history courses in addition to completing studio work. Students must pass two reviews each semester and create a visual thesis and written report.
Applicants to both the B. F. A. and M. F. A. programs must submit a portfolio. Merit and need-based scholarships are available; Massachusetts residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored scholarships and grants. Graduate assistantships are also available. Students from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont may be eligible for reduced tuition through the New England Regional Student Program.
